56 years ago today, my brothers, dad and I poured a garage concrete slab all hand dug, mixed and poured. At the end of the day we proudly scratched our names on it. As I was only 10 years old and didn’t know, I asked my dad what Labor Day was? He said, “It’s a day to work!” In years to follow I find myself working and always give dad a shout out “At your insistence dad I’m working!” Keeping up with the tradition, I’m headed out the door on my way to work!

Here is a picture of a slab I poured on Labor Day 1969. I was 10 years old. We had our own gravel pit. We hand shoved the gravel into a 1967 Ford. My mom drove it up the driveway and backed up to the gas engine driven concrete mixer. We hand shoveled it into the mixer and added sand and cement. After it was mixed to my dad’s consistency we poured it into a wheelbarrow and on to the slab. I remember the day we signed our names, I asked dad what Labor Day was and he said, “it’s a day to work!” 55 years later it seems like that is what I do on Labor Day, work. Dad said so!
