It’s officially spring! And in typical spring fashion, Wisconsin weather has fluctuated from warm and sunny back to a wintery mix within a matter of days. However, plants are not likely to get fooled into growing too soon by those early warm days, thanks to internal processes that control growth.

Spotted lanternfly (SLF), an invasive plant pest, is rapidly spreading but is not yet established in Wisconsin. Be on the lookout for it and report sightings at https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/60711c6caf8d4004835a244021785df9.

Be mindful of the many native lookalikes, including large milkweed bugs and sphynx moths, as most are beneficial to the environment. For more information on SLF and common lookalikes, check out the MISP website at https://www.michigan.gov/invasives/id-report/insects/spotted-lanternfly/look-alikes.

We updated our website with the new version of the USDA's Plant Hardiness Zone Map so you can add it to your bookmarks! Using better mapping methods and data from more weather stations, the 2023 map is more accurate and detailed than prior versions.

The Plant Hardiness Zone Map is a valuable tool for gardeners. These zones refer to the plant’s ability to survive the winter. It plays a key factor when you are selecting plants for your garden, yard, and landscapes. Remember, the zone designations do not reflect the coldest it has ever been or ever will be at a specific location. They represent the average lowest winter temperature for the location over a specified time frame, 30 years in this case. So when you are looking at catalogs and plant tags, check that hardiness zone! 😉
