🚨 PUBLIC WARNING: Garage Door Service Scams Targeting Central Illinois
I am issuing this warning to protect homeowners across Central Illinois.
Over the past several months, multiple residents in Bloomington, Normal, and surrounding communities have contacted us believing they had scheduled service with The Door Doctor — only to discover they had been dealing with imposters.
These incidents are not isolated. Police reports have been filed. Fraud and possible elder exploitation are suspected.
Here’s what’s happening:
Homeowners search Google for “garage door repair” and click a sponsored listing. They believe they are calling a reputable local company. Instead, they reach an out-of-area call center posing as a local business.
A technician arrives — often in an unmarked vehicle — and claims to be affiliated with a known local company. Customers are then:
Quoted thousands of dollars for minor repairs
Pressured into immediate payment
Sold low-grade products at extreme markups
Given generic paper receipts
Promised warranties that are never honored
In one documented case:
A customer was charged $1,200 for cables and drums — a repair that typically costs around $250 depending on the company.
Another homeowner was sold a basic retail opener for over $2,000, including separate charges for parts that come standard in the box.
In another incident, damage was intentionally created to justify additional repairs.
Multiple victims believed they were working with The Door Doctor. They were not.
How to Protect Yourself
If you need garage door service:
✔️ Verify the company has a physical local address
✔️ Be cautious of generic websites and 1-800 numbers
✔️ Confirm the technician arrives in a clearly branded vehicle
✔️ Do not feel pressured into immediate high-dollar repairs
✔️ Call the company directly using a verified local number
If something feels wrong — it probably is.

A Call to Action
If you or someone you know believes they have been a victim of fraud:
📌 Gather documentation
📌 Contact your local law enforcement agency and file a report
📌 Notify the company you believed you were hiring
The only way this stops is through awareness and accountability.
I am asking local media, radio stations, and community leaders to help share this warning so more homeowners are not taken advantage of. It could be your family member next. This has gone too far.
If you are a reporter or media outlet and would like to speak with me directly, I am available.
Let’s protect our community.
