The Perfect Game

Did you know... a perfect game in checkers is one that ends in a draw? No winner, just two equally-matched strategists – masters of the game!

Speaking of masters of the game, Grand Master Alex Moiseyev from Dublin, OH will be at the Pop Top Checkers Friends and Family event on Thursday, June 25th, where he will present an exhibition unlike any other. He will play multiple checkers opponents, on multiple boards, AT THE SAME TIME. Will he win them all? You’ll only know if you come and watch!

Also, at the June 25th Friends and Family event, we welcome community members to come and play. Bring your favorite opponent, your “lucky checker board” (or use one of ours), and your best game for some good old-fashioned summer fun. All winners get bragging rights. There’s no charge, but you do need to register so we can have enough seats for all players. Visit our website to register.

The Pop Top Checkers Tournament takes place Thursday June 25th through Saturday June 27th, at the Waxhaw Woman’s Club, 200 E. South Main St., Waxhaw.

DID YOU KNOW... checkers is one of the oldest games in human civilization? The earliest version of it, called Alquerque, was played by the ancient Egyptians. Archaeologists even found early versions of the game in the ancient Iraqi city of Ur, dating back to roughly 3000 BC.

A game of strategy, checkers has over 500 billion possible board positions, and a perfect game of checkers always ends in a draw. And, it’s the only game where you can win by losing!

Want to know more? Are you already a checkers fan? Would you like to see some amazing strategic skill at the checkerboard? Well, you’re in luck... the Second Annual Memorial W.H. Collins and Maxwell McCain Pop Top Checkers Tournament, hosted by the Waxhaw Woman’s Club is happening in Waxhaw June 25-27.

June 25th will be the Friends and Family event, where everyone is welcome to play from 1-5 p.m. June 26-27 will be the tournament event where you’ll be able to observe the masters of the game with players who have come from all over the eastern part of the country.
