The Illinois Department of Public Health wants you to be aware of Poison Hemlock. This dangerous plant is affecting the respiratory system and causing parts of the body to swell and blister within hours. Common exposures can include mowing ditches, weeding, and other outdoor occupations. Poison Hemlock contains a toxin, conine. Conine can cause paralysis, seizures, autonomic instability, respiratory depression, comas, and possibly death if ingested. Please wear gloves, long pants and long-sleeve shirts if working around unfamiliar outdoor plants. Always be sure to wash your hands with soap and water after removing gloves and wash your clothing in hot water. If you have been exposed to Poison Hemlock and are experiencing symptoms please call 911 or get to the Emergency Department.
