What’s going on up on this roof? Those marks aren’t just a regular sign of age, and the implications of them could be worse than just a cosmetic eyesore.

These are signs of roof algae (probably Gloeocapsa magma), and it showed up here for a combination of reasons.

The location of this roof slope just underneath a large tree allows for the spread of algae via direct contact leaves and small branches naturally separate from the tree over time. Moisture and lack of UV exposure (due to the shade the tree provides) to this area allow it to continue to grow independently on the roof.

I didn’t run a sample to be sure, but this is an older shingle, and probably does not feature modern technology like copper-infused granules for algae resistance, worsening the issue.

At first this is purely cosmetic. Over time, it holds moisture on the shingle surface, which can speed up wear and aging.

If your roof is starting to show signs like this, it usually indicates the system is getting older and more vulnerable.
