Our farm's social media has been quiet this growing season, but for good reasons. We call this our "rebuild" summer πŸ› οΈ scaling back on typical growing season fun so we can use the time to build, grow, & prepare for the big things we've wanted for some time: a beautiful raised garden oasis, converting a semi trailer into barn bays, hatching more hens for more eggs, & a fenced in area for more animals 🌾

We still have work to do before the first freeze, but wanted to spend this summer/fall getting everything set up so all we have to do in the spring is plant seeds & bring animals home πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸŒΎπŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸŒΎ

Looking forward to next year when the farm stand will be out from spring through the fall to share with the community the fruits of our labor 🌻🧑

The sun is out (finally!) so we hit the flea market this morning & when I saw this small crate (& was told it was only $5) I knew exactly why I needed it! The woman saw my excitement & said, "I literally just put this out, it must be fate!" πŸ’«

Now we get to start the "meet & greet" phase with our 3.5 week old chicks & the 7 week old chicks πŸ₯ Hopefully the littles will be able to move in soon with minimal pecking order drama 🎭

When we bought this property in 2019, it had a massive pool that we used as a fire pit for all the material we acquired during the rebuild/remodel of the house. Over the years it has slowly filled & I started to dream of the day I would turn it into a raised garden bed oasis. I still have a long way to go before my vision is completed, but I'm feeling super grateful for where we are at this moment ✨

Just need to get the rest of the garden beds out of the barn, fill them, & then finally plant the seedlings I have growing in the house (if the summer weather decides to hang out for more than 2 days in a row) 🌱

Now that we have a rooster, my husband gifted me an incubator for Christmas & I have had two successful rounds of chicks!! The first batch, who are officially outside as of today, was a 100% hatch rate (7!) & the second batch was also very successful with 8 of our 10 hatching. The kids have loved the entire process & we even brought the first batch to my daughter's first grade class (SO much fun!). Once the second round have some more feathers, they'll move out with their older siblings & towards the middle of summer, we'll integrate them with the older Mama's & Dad. I think "angry bird" is my favorite so far for obvious reasons 🀣

Chicken tending is not for the faint of heart. There are so many great things about it, but everything great comes with it's own set of hurdles. My biggest pain point right now: rats!! So many rats. While I do have to admit, they are adorable, they are also very dangerous & can hurt your chickens. They also eat A LOT of feed, which becomes very expensive.

I saw CustomsAnd Cuckoos recommend this trap, the Ratinator, & knew I had to give it a shot. Last night we trapped 8 rats, putting our total catch number at 12 for this trap alone 🀯 I'm curious how many more we have left!

As we gear up for Spring (even though it's snowing today), one of our ladies needs a little extra TLC to treat her bumblefoot. Instead of being out in the cold, she has a day at the "spa" with an epsom salt foot soak & a new shoe! You never know what might be in a tub inside a farmhouse 🀫

Getting excited for all the things spring & summer will bring. The farm stand will be out soon too, more information to come! πŸ₯š
