Well, today is April 25, 2026, and my day took a turn when my trusty golf cart suddenly refused to work. I tinkered with it for a while before deciding the battery was likely the culprit. It’s a gas‑powered cart, but it still needs a battery to start. I’ve had that cart for seven winters, stored indoors but in the coldest of cold Maine weather, and it has never once been on a charger or trickle charge. It has always run, since the battery isn’t heavily stressed once the gas engine takes over.

I headed over to my kind neighbor, Tom Wheeler, and he loaned me his trickle charger. While that situation sorts itself out—and with several days of rain in the forecast—I went ahead and stocked the plant stand with the first offerings of the season. Even without the open sign or the road signs up yet, I’m still declaring: We are open.

I have three varieties of everbearing strawberries at $3.97 each or 3 for $10.00.
The perennial sale is back as well: small perennials that will be bumped to larger pots after mid‑May and sold for $7.97—but right now, in the small pots, they’re $7.97 today. And as last year, if you buy 10 of any varieties (about 10 kinds available), the total is just $50.00.

I also have a few bleeding hearts out (more in the greenhouse) at $9.97.
Beautiful tomato plants—rugged Red Beefsteak heirloom tomatoes—are $4.97 each, limited supply, with only a few out right now. Protect them carefully; frost will kill them fast. I’ll move a few more out Monday or Tuesday.

My head is a bit rattled from hauling plants around in the car instead of the golf cart and from not having eaten yet. I’m in the middle of cleaning, so please bear with me—it will get there, only to be done again as usual. I’ll be using the leaf blower, so if you see me, keep some distance; there’s a lot of grit in the air.

Remember, this is a farm, officially classified by the state, so natural hazards are part of the landscape. Come visit often—new things arrive all the time. The Thursday and Friday before Memorial Day will bring the veggies, herbs, annuals, and hanging baskets. I’ll post when they arrive.

It is April and life is stirring around Blue Vue Plants at 586 West Side Rd, Weld, ME. Blue Vue Plants has been in business since 2009 – so 2026 starts its 18th year. Grown from paper sign and some small hosta for thousand of annuals, veggies, herbs, hanging baskets (all come in right around Memorial Weekend – usually the Thur or Friday before) PLUS perennials, shrubs and fruit trees. Just added some potted garlic – grow you own! Today I was outside most of the day or in the greenhouse. On Tuesday I took delivery of fruit trees and some perennials. Many of the perennials will be potted up and available the first of May as the special we had last year – most of the them sell normally at least $7.97 but for this select group you can do mix and match and purchase 10 for $50.00. Perennials for you who are just getting into gardening come back year after year – sometimes only 2-3 year but many for several years. Hostas and Echinaceas are example of perennial.

Today we will highlight the fruit tree shipment that just arrived. The photo is a few of them just out of the boxes and sitting waiting to be potted. We have the following:

Reliance Peach
Zone: 4–8
Description: A remarkably cold-hardy freestone peach specifically bred to withstand harsh winters. It produces medium-to-large fruit with a dull red blush over a yellow-green skin, offering a sweet, mild flavor that is excellent for fresh eating, canning, and freezing.

Elberta Peach
Zone: 5–9
Description: One of the most popular commercial peaches in the world due to its high productivity and firm, yellow flesh. This freestone variety features a classic peach flavor with a slight tang and is recognized by its golden-yellow skin covered with a deep red blush.

Bartlett Pear
Zone: 5–7
Description: The standard for North American pears, known for its iconic bell shape and skin that transitions from green to clear yellow as it ripens. The white flesh is exceptionally smooth, buttery, and sweet, making it the preferred choice for both fresh consumption and commercial canning.

Kieffer Pear
Zone: 4–9
Description: A hardy and vigorous hybrid variety that is highly resistant to fire blight and tolerant of various soil conditions. The large, crisp fruit has a coarse texture that mellows when stored, making it ideal for preserves, baking, and canning.

Honey Crisp Apple
Zone: 3–7
Description: Renowned for its exceptionally crisp, "snapping" texture and well-balanced sweet-tart flavor profile. The fruit features a mottled red skin over a yellow-green background and is highly valued for its long storage life and versatility in both snacking and salads.

Santa Rosa Plum
Zone: 5–9
Description: A premier Japanese plum variety that serves as an excellent pollinator for other plums. It produces large, round fruit with deep purple skin and rich, honey-like amber flesh that is tinged with red near the skin, providing a complex, sweet-tart taste.

All are priced at $25.97 each. They will be potted up and put out into the area where all the other fruit trees are (end of the new section for those who have been here before) in the next few weeks. There are other varieties of fruit trees from previous years also.

Just a reminder to all – this is a “self-serve” stand. That means you wait on yourself. If I am about and you spot me, you can ask directions or questions – but remember I am the only one working here. There is a parking area right off the 586 West Side Rd on your LEFT. So cash, check or Venmo. I should have a QR code in place you can scan and pay. Cash box is at the stand. Remember to bring your phone so you can keep a running tab of your purchases. And all weather clothes – this is an all outdoor adventure in shopping – as gardening should be!

I just finished doing spreadsheets for this year to track sales and expenses - can't say it is a favorite job but it is essential to good business practices and give me an audit trail for taxes. While finishing up I have gone to Facebook to get the number of followers to add to my spreadsheets (like to keep track of that as part of my marketing). My article should be the Turner Publishing free newspaper - mid to late April (watch for the coupon)! Anyways, while here on Facebook I decided I should take a preview of some of 2025 and share it with you - just photos of what spring will bring here at Blue Vue - as well as many other things. Here you will see the roses by the BV sign - been there several years, but did the best they ever have this year. There is also a picture of stand with the delivery of annuals and hanging baskets (coming the week of May 18th, 2026 - probably Thursday or Friday before Memorial Day). Also a freshly bloomed clematis - had them going in the green house early spring of 2025 to boost them a long a bit. Ah, the pansy - must have pansies for opening - that will delay my opening if they are not ready. They have smile in them! Net photo is my view from my desk of Mount Blue early in the morning. And final photo was taken May 1st should you think I work all the time. Took a break and had a good hour or so of fishing - 2 days worth of breakfast for me. So watch for my article and coupons in mid April and get yourself ready. I know it is a bit "barren" at BV the first of May - but the pansies will be here to brighten it up. That is Blue Vue Plants - 586 West Side Rd - Weld, ME - 04285. More fruit trees coming too! All self serve - good soil available - bring your 5 gallon bucket and shovel - $5.00 a 5 gallon bucket. You shovel it. Cash box at the stand - cash or check. I am working on Venmo for this year - so perhaps have a QR code for you to scan and pay. Make sure you bring your phone to track your plant costs. Almost anything I sell is less than $30 and 75% less than $15.00.

Well just came in from Blue Vue Plants here at 586 West Side Rd, Weld ME. Black flies seeming to like the cooler weather. Anyways I just wanted to mention that I have 3 varieties of Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus) - they are Aphrodite Hibiscus, Bluebird Hibiscus and Minerva Hibiscus. I have none blooming so can't show those. However, if you google the varieties, you will see what they look like. They grow to be a tall shrub - 8 to 12 feet high and 6 to 10 to feet wide. Full Sun. And they are one of my favorite shrubs - and they bloom for a lengthy period of time. I have set one of each color aside for my own gardens and excited to see them develop over the next few years. Weather looks like it will be nice tomorrow (Fri 6/27) - with some rain on Saturday. Come on out and visit us - cash or check, self-serve and open all daylight hours. Cash box at the stand and thousands of perennials with some hanging baskets, annuals and veggies left.

I have gotten done potting some of what's in the greenhouse here at Blue Vue Plants, 586 West Side Rd, Weld, ME. Rose of Sharon Hibiscus and Clematis are some of the newest adds to the stand as well as the boxes out by the red cart. The Rose of Sharon (seen often as ROS) is a compact, deciduous shrub selected for abundance of superior, continuous flowers with longer bloom season. These are young plants just looking for a home - they will be a beautiful addition. I have Blue Bird (blue), Minerva (pink) and Aphrodite (pink - only different!). These are gorgeous. I have to say that this is on favorites list for sure. I have set aside one of each for future planting in my landscape. Also, notice I have 7-8 types of new clematis here - all varieties. I know, you are saying "I don't like climbing stuff" and that is what I USED to say until several years ago when I got a Jackmanii. WOW! After a couple years it was a sight to see - and blooms until frost. Beautiful purplish blooms. I have a great variety here and some I have staked up with bush cuttings to better display. So, these are located on the stand as well as down where the red cart (see photo) and then go in and turn back to look up towards the stand - clematis right at your feet and Rose of Sharon about 4 rows further up. I believe I have bench cards out for all of them. Have added more perennials - and have more to come. It is the TIME TO PLANT. Temps are good. Rain is coming at a nice pace to keep things growing. Remember - cash or check. Just a mile down on West Side Rd from the State Park on Webb Lake. Open all day light hours - 7 days a week.

Just 2 quick things for Blue Vue Plants at 586 West Side Rd Weld, ME for now. First - Beautiful Sunsugar tomato plants are out on the table for sale up by the cash box. These are 1.5-2' tall and have blossoms and a few have tiny fruit. These are one of the sweetest cherry tomato and are indeterminate (meaning they keep producing all the growing season - endless cherry tomatoes). Given a couple or three weeks and you will be picking tomatoes and enjoying a delicious treat. The individual pots are $4.97. Second - my truck will be here tomorrow (supposedly at 8:00 a.m.) with the hanging baskets, veggies and herbs as well as annuals. So if the truck is here when you come - please take another drive around the blocks. I do not want anyone injured as we unload. These racks are heavy, and the road is a great place to have a runaway cart. 13" hangers are $32.97 and 11" hangers are $23.97. All Annuals are $7.97 and Veggies & Herbs are $3.50. Remember cash or checks only - self serve and all outside - so come dressed for the weather so you can enjoy yourself! Lots to see and 100's of perennials and shrubs - and more yet to come after this rain front moves through.
