DK Handyman DK Handyman: Small and Large Projects Around the Home. A good handyman's skills are the culmination of years of experience.

Dave Kassab learned the handyman trade like most. He learned a great deal from his father, who mostly learned from trial and error. Over the years, he used what he learned from his father and others, as well as his Navy training as an electrician, to fix things around his home and the homes of friends and relatives. Soon smaller projects grew into complete renovations. While Dave was accumulating

handyman experience on a growing variety of small and large projects, he had a successful career in health care public relations followed by 20 years of running his own marketing communications business. In fact, he started DK Handyman as a sideline to fill gaps between marketing clients and to generate better cash flow. He learned quickly that the combination of his contracting skills along with his creative and communication abilities opened the door to new possibilities. The sideline business grew quickly and today, Dave Kassab is a full-time handyman/contractor. The Honesty Factor

When homeowners have questions regarding how to approach a repair problem or whether or not they should do anything at all, they need a qualified answer they can trust. Honesty is at the core of everything we do at DK Handyman. We are often asked to perform work that is not necessary. For instance, a homeowner may notice some dry rot around windows and request that we replace the windows. While that is certainly an option, many times the simpler and less costly solution is to replace the rotted molding with a plastic wood that will never need painting and will never rot. And, while we are certainly capable of installing things like hardwood, laminate, and vinyl flooring and garage door openers, it is often more cost effective to hire an installer who specializes in this kind of work. While it would be easy to simply accept the work in these cases, we do not feel that would be in our customers' best interest. At DK Handyman we will always point out a less expensive solution to problems if appropriate, and if we feel you can get a better price from a specialized installer, we will tell you.

Spring is in the air! Time for some outdoor maintenance: If your deck is dirty, you don't usually need to power wash. Purchase some deck wash from a home center. You may need to do a little extra scrubbing, but these products do a fine job of cleaning lightly- or moderately-soiled decks. Don't forget to thoroughly rinse surrounding vegetation before and after.

Sprucing up a room while staying home? When painting walls and ceilings, never use semi-gloss or high-gloss paint. These glosses will highlight *every* imperfection in your walls. Instead, try an eggshell finish, or a washable flat finish.

Raised garden beds are a great way to grow fresh vegetables. Unfortunately, the kinds we've found at home centers are expensive, only about 7" tall and usually about 4' long. For the same cost (about $50), you can build a 2' x 6'bed that is 11" tall.

To build it you'll need four 2x6 x 8's, one 4x4 post and two -inch exterior screws. (Treated lumber is not recommended, use Douglas fir instead).

When you have all the materials, cut the 4x4 into six, 10" pieces, and cut two feet off of each 2x6. Lay two post pieces on their sides then screw two 2x6 pieces to each post (screw the posts at either end of the boards). Repeat for the other two posts and boards. To complete the box, screw two of the shirt boards to either end.

If you lack the skill or tools to complete this project, we can build it for you in one hour or $80 plus materials.

Please post questions for this or any other project to this page. We are always happy to help.

If you're sitting around your house being a little bored, I'll be posting some simple DIY projects for you to consider.

💡Today's Tip💡
If you are hanging curtain rods, heavy shelves, mirrors or pictures in drywall, don't use the plastic anchors that are often supplied. Instead, look for specialty anchors at your home center. Someone there should be able to guide you based on your project needs.

💡Today's Tip💡
If doors start to stick or rub, the first thing to check are the screws in the hinges. 🚨Do not over tighten as you can easily strip the screw out. If hinge screws cannot be tightened, fill the hole with toothpicks or a golf tee, and snap or cut off the excess. This will give the screw something to bite into.

Dave’s tip: before winter sets in, walk around the outside of your house looking carefully for cracked caulk around your windows, doors, and all molding and trim. Be sure to check for cracks at the bottom of entry doors and garage doors where the doors meet concrete. Re-seal cracked caulk and repair any rotted wood trim to prevent big problems down the road.
