Teach Me Tuesday: How to Spot Failing Trim and Rot

Exterior trim does more than improve your home’s appearance—it also helps keep moisture out. When trim begins to fail, water can get behind it and cause costly damage.

Watch for these warning signs:
✅ Soft or spongy wood
✅ Cracked, bubbling, or peeling paint
✅ Visible cracks or gaps
✅ Dark stains or discoloration
✅ Mold, mildew, or algae growth
✅ Loose trim, popped nails, or a hollow sound when tapped

Pay special attention around windows, doors, rooflines, and exterior corners. Catching rot early can often mean a smaller repair and help prevent damage from spreading.
