Perched in the coveted Bird Streets of Los Angeles, this home has been reimagined with a deep respect for its original essence while embracing bold, modern enhancements. The existing Spanish-style structure was preserved not just for its character but for its thoughtful placement within the landscape, ensuring it remains in harmony with its surroundings. Rather than replacing, we refined—modifying the home to open up new possibilities while honoring what was already there.

A newly carved tunnel through the hillside creates a seamless transition from the garage to the main residence, with an exposed elevator shaft providing effortless access through each level—from the pool deck to the primary suite. A stunning pool with jetliner views, a subterranean guest house, and an expanded main level redefine the experience of space, light, and connection to the city beyond.

Designed for a client whose vision bridges heritage and innovation, this project by June Street Architecture is a testament to the power of thoughtful transformation—where the past is not erased but elevated, and every addition is made in service of the home’s inherent beauty.

Starting with the original footprint of this 1956 post & beam home, JSA refurbished the kitchen, enlarged the primary suite and designed a discreet addition to its side to allow for two children’s rooms with en suite baths. The entry was redesigned as a light filled piano room/library, complete with hidden desk. Everything served to maximize flow, function and light.

“Past & Present” in the new California Homes Magazine explains how a historically protected Hancock Park home was renovated with respect for original details but incorporated modern elements. Tranquil beauty was achieved with a largely muted palette. In the Living Room, traditional wainscoting and crown molding contrast with Mutina Tile from Italy on the fireplace surround and modern GUBI swivel chairs. The palette continues in the kitchen and breakfast room and was complemented by the warmth of oak cabinetry and brass fixtures. The primary bedroom had its ceiling raised to the rafters, a gable vent became a circular window, and modern furnishings completed its spacious and soothing feel. The chandelier and chaise lounge are from the Diva Group. Custom bedside tables were made with leather fronts. Read more about this fantastic project. Link in bio. .la

One of the ways JSA increased the square footage of this Hancock Park home was to cantilever two bedroom suites, creating a covered back patio. The look is more contemporary and open than the American Colonial Revival facade but maintained the traditional lines of the original architecture.
