Plants that glow at dusk. ๐
Most gardens die at sunset.
Yours doesn't have to.
There is an entire category of plants designed by nature to perform specifically after dark white flowers that seem to generate their own light in the moonlight, blooms that only open as the sun goes down, fragrances that don't even begin until evening air cools and settles.
Plant these three and your garden becomes a completely different place after 7pm. ๐ฟ
๐ค Moonflower (Ipomoea alba)
The most dramatic plant in the night garden. Flowers stay tightly closed all day then as dusk arrives, you can almost watch them open in real time. Large, pure white, perfectly circular blooms up to 6 inches across. They open in minutes as darkness falls. By midnight the fragrance is extraordinary sweet, warm and heavy. Gone by morning. Every single night a new flower. Grows fast on a trellis 10 to 15 feet in a single season.
๐ค White Sweet Alyssum
Low, soft and endlessly generous. A carpet of tiny white flowers that catches every fragment of available moonlight and seems to glow from the ground upward. Honey-sweet fragrance that intensifies dramatically in the cool evening air. Blooms continuously from spring through first frost almost never stops. Edge your beds with it and your entire garden glows softly at the base level all season.
๐ค Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis)
Opens exclusively at dusk closed all day, then unfurls its pale lemon-yellow petals as light fades. Tall, architectural, slightly wild-looking. A magnet for night-pollinating moths you will see hawk moths hovering over it in the dark the way hummingbirds work flowers by day. Flowers only last one night but the plant produces dozens in succession. Self-seeds prolifically plant once, return forever.
Together these three create something that has to be seen to be understood. A garden that is more beautiful at 9pm than at noon. ๐
