Before and After:

My current project @ 201 Commerce Street @ Alley Park: restoring stained finish on 6 exterior doors. Why does a stained finish on an exterior door deteriorate so fast? Is there a way to finish doors that will last 5+ years.



In the vast majority of cases the culprit in premature finish failure on stain and varnish systems in the STAIN, not the varnish. Very often stains that are labeled “interior / exterior” are used. The term “interior / exterior” means that the product is resistant to moisture and temperature changes but NOT UV exposure (read the fine print on the label). When wood is exposed to direct sunlight, over time oxidation takes place. Interior / Exterior products are not compatible with that natural process and break down underneath the varnish. What to Do? Enter “ProLuxe Cetol door and window wood finish”. This product is made exclusively with iron oxide pigments which are compatible with process of oxidation of the wood. The initial product cost is noticeably higher than other systems but do the math on 2 years vs 5 years. One additional drawback is that iron oxide pigments limit the range of color choice to some degree, so some colors are not available such as a deep red mahogany color. Applying a glaze (also referred to as a wash) is often a way of toning down certain colors in brick while retaining an unpainted look. I have had great results with this technique on many occasions.

Manifest your vision with collaboration

1. Dianne initiated contact with HPM by text which contained a photo of her distressed cabinet concept. Using her idea, we searched the internet for similar, but more suitable concepts for her kitchen…. We forwarded our findings to Dianne.
2. Next, we met at Dianne’s home beginning the collaborative design process. We photographed the counters, flooring, furniture, and wall color.
3. Upon return to our Faux Effects shop, we studied the photographs and created 3 cabinet door samples with varied colors and patterns.
4. Meeting with Dianne a second time, we presented our samples in her kitchen. After conferring, the favored elements were woven into the final design.
5. Immediately, we began the process of transforming her plain white cabinets into the aged faux design.
