In a previous post, we mentioned that we consider ourselves technical-creatives, equal parts left and right brained.

What does that mean for you? Not every designer will tell you this, but it is absolutely possible to mix styles successfully even in your primary bath. Take this series of projects we designed:

Photo 1:  The mid-century flooring paired with classic marble mosaic juxtapose the vintage claw-foot tub. Why does this work? The sharp contrast of the white tub allows it to sit center-stage in an artful way and the hard surfaces play off each other both in pattern and color. The three elements create a melody of differences that both complement and balance the tension.

Photo 2:  Again, the mid-century flooring paired with classic marble mosaic complement a similar marble countertop, creating a harmonious color palette. The clean lines of the contemporary vanity ground the detail of the mid-century sconces and vintage mirror. Similar to Photo 1, these elements work by creating a connection in both color and complementary detail.

Photo 3:  As a whole, the bath’s mix of styles is quite subtle yet works nicely to create an organic and homogeneous feeling in the space. The soft neutral color palette of this bathroom serves to connect the elements, such as the Moroccan, handmade wall tile, glass mosaic floor tile, and the overscaled beaded chandelier. In isolation, each disparate element is unique and represents a variety of periods / design styles. Further complementing the mix in this bath, is the traditional lines of the white oak vanity, classic hardware, plumbing finishes and sconces.

Photo 4:  The quiet palette of each element creates a relationship between the various elements and styles. The modern tub is complemented by the classic brass tub filler and the marble wall tile is grounded by the subtle linen floor tile. Though a personal space, light plays a key role in this space, illuminating the entire space and creating a connected yet ethereal experience.
