A visit from a beautiful creature! 🦋

Our neighbors said that this is a Cabbage Butterfly. They also said that they were not good for our garden... but we didn't mind sharing some greens!

With such a name, it is obvious that they are attracted to cabbage but in our case, it was the cauliflower. After having laid eggs, we found some caterpillars eating most of the cauliflower's leaves. To allow them to stay and control the situation at the same time, we rounded up all the caterpillars and put them on one specific plant for them to only eat the leaves from that one plant and in terms, the others would be left in peace.
It is true that we would find many eaten leaves but later in the season, the cauliflowers still managed to grow big healthy leaves 🍃 🙌
With that said, we still did not have a good crop as only one out of the five plants actually gave us a cauliflower. Could this be because of the situation with the Cabbage white? Personally, I don't think so, because we planted the seeds late. Cauliflower should be sown very early in the year and planted out mid spring (normally they should take about 5 months from sowing to harvest stage) which we did not do. Also we were in Canada at the time, the seasons are somewhat short.
Let us know in the comments if you think it was the butterflies's fault or our rookie mistake! 👇📝
In any case, so much is to be learned about gardening and mother nature... it is a non-stop journey! 🤗

I must add that, yes, they are considered as a pest. Quoting the internet: "they are among the world's most invasive pests...".
But in our view, they are just as much part of the ecosystem as any other creature! Not only that, their butterfly form added so much beauty to the garden that they were worth the few cauliflowers. It's all a matter of what you want for your crops and garden 🙃

For it's names, it is known in Europe as the small white, in North America as the cabbage white or cabbage butterfly, on several continents as the small cabbage white, and in New Zealand as the white butterfly. 🤓

🍊 It's clementine season in Europe! We found these trees planted along the sidewalk in the beautiful town of Hyères in the South of France. 🇫🇷

🌳 Trees like these are common throughout the Mediterranean region where it is very warm and sunny for most of the year 🌞 so the harvest may be from late October to February.

It's great to be able to walk in urban areas and find such beautiful plants. 😍 We can only imagine what a full field of this would look like! We know the island of Corsica has a big production of Clementines! Perhaps one day we will visit... 🤔🙌

What a great present to receive! 🎁 This could be a gift idea for you for next Christmas 🎄 or upcoming birthdays... Do you know anyone who would like a gift like this?

Succulent plants, or simply Succulents, are not only beautiful and fascinating, they are also very easy to take care of! Since the habitats of these water-preserving plants are often in areas with high temperatures and low rainfall such as deserts, they have the ability to thrive on limited water sources, such as mist and dew, which makes them equipped to survive in an ecosystem that contains scarce water sources. They are indeed drought resistant plants.

For you, this means that you don't need to worry about watering them very often! 💧They are made for retaining water in arid climates or soil conditions. 🏜

So if you are looking to save on water, Succulents are the way to go!🪴

Located in the new garden we will be in 🙌. It is winter in France so we have time for all the fruits and veggies but we still have some interesting plants. This one is growing in the pond.

The Cyperus papyrus is a wetland sedge and this one is about 2 years old. 🌿

Papyrus is first known to have been used in Egypt at least as far back as the First Dynasty. The papyrus plant was once abundant across the Nile Delta. It was also used throughout the Mediterranean region and in the Kingdom of Kush.

Papyrus (plural: papyri) can also refer to a document written on sheets of such material, joined side by side and rolled up into a scroll, an early form of a book. It is a material similar to thick paper that was used in ancient times. It was made from the pith (a tissue in the stems of vascular plants)
of the papyrus plant.

Apart from a writing material, ancient Egyptians employed papyrus in the construction of other artifacts, such as reed boats, mats, rope, sandals, and baskets. 🌍

Stay tuned for gardening and homesteading in the south of France! 🌹🌻🌲🪴🐓🐝

"Winter sowing is a method of starting seeds outdoors in winter. This is generally done with seeds that require a period of cold stratification. The method takes advantage of natural temperatures, rather than artificially refrigerating seeds.
Winter sowing involves sowing seeds in a miniature greenhouse outside during winter, allowing them to germinate in spring. Users of this method have had success in most hardiness zones." - Wikipedia

The Scottish thisle-artichoke... Artichoke thisle! 😲

We planted artichokes and when the flower opened... there was a crossed pollination with the Scottish national flower! It is not a suprise that they are both from the same family. 🌱

In Argentina, the thisle grows like a wild herb and can be found easily! 🌎

Interesting isn't it?? 😀

Beautiful or not? 🤔

Had to share this flower we found in the streets. 🌺

Datura is a genus of nine species of poisonous, vespertine-flowering plants belonging to the nightshade family Solanaceae. They are commonly known as thornapples or jimsonw**ds, but are also known as devil's trumpets (not to be confused with angel's trumpets, which are placed in the closely related genus Brugmansia). Other English common names include moonflower, devil's w**d, and hell's bells. All species of Datura are poisonous and potentially psychoactive, especially their seeds and flowers, which can cause respiratory depression, arrhythmias, fever, delirium, hallucinations, anticholinergic syndrome, psychosis, and even death if taken internally. Due to their effects and symptoms, they have occasionally been used not only as poisons, but also as hallucinogens by various groups throughout history. Traditionally, psychoactive administration of Datura species has often been associated with witchcraft and sorcery or similar practices in many cultures, including the Western world. Certain common Datura species have also been used ritualistically as entheogens by some Native American groups. Nonpsychoactive use of the plant is usually done for medicinal purposes, and the alkaloids present in plants of the Datura genus have long been considered traditional medicines in both the New and Old Worlds due to the presence of the alkaloids scopolamine and atropine, which are also produced by Old World plants such as Hyoscyamus niger, Atropa belladonna, and Mandragora officinarum.

Do you have any plants like these or related in your area?

One of our corn plants from the garden in Canada. We had a big issue with the earwigs... Even though they can be beneficial by helping in compost piles and they also eat nuisances like aphids, mites and undesirable nematodes, as well as other insect larvae. But earwigs can become a semi-pest themselves if left unchecked. Had so many of them this year they were EVERYWHERE! Could it be because the garden we made provided them with enough food and shelter?

They absolutely loved our corn, eating all the silks off! The earwigs left the corn seeds alone but would hang out in every spot they could find and especially in-between the leaf and the stalk.

It is important that the tassels stay on. Each hair is connected to a seed so without the tassels the pollen would not make it. We found different ways of controlling the earwigs. The best option was to dig a small whole, put a cup or container or other in with olive oil and soy sauce. Now just wait for them to fall in! We would also go out at night (that is when they are active) to see where and on which plant they are. We would spray the ones we see with rubbing alcohol and water mix.

If you have grown corn before what problems have you had? How did you deal with the issue?
