Came across the “Brigham Street Burial Grounds” in Northborough (formerly part of Marlborough, MA), this cemetery was founded in 1726 (300 yrs ago). This cemetery predates the Declaration of Independence by 50 years!

Humbled by this headstone for this British Subject, Aaron Wheeler, who passed at the age of 19 years of age. He died on 12 April 1747 (289 years ago today!).

Back in Needham, MA, one of our favorite towns for residential makeovers. Increased land values over the last decade have, at times, left homeowners sitting in a property worth more then the house itself. This makes property ripe for developers to bulldoze quaint homes and replace with McMansions. So we are always pleased when a homeowner chooses to retain us to design an appropriately scaled intervention.

Located in the toney suburb of Wellesley, MA, this Bedroom/Bathroom addition was built to accommodate this clients aging mother. The project pulls elements, including brick, from the original home, and infuses them into a complimentary gable form.

Located on the property of the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station, this Sales Center designed by SMOOK serves as a gateway to a new mixed-used community - Union Point (formerly Southfield).

The design is a fusion of agrarian and contemporary themes. Large pin mounted letters adorn the building building announcing - you have arrived!

Looking back we see how this building had been influenced by Clay’s earlier works - designing residential and commercial New England Vernicular Architecture, as well as, marquee retail, dining and entertainment venues around America.

A design study for an addition to a 60,000sf Medical Office Building in Wareham. SMOOK was the designer of the original Southcoast Health Facility 17 years ago and SGA (Boston | New York) was the Architect-of-Record.

The expansion, connected by a Skybridge, adds 20,000sf of Doctors Offices, as well as Urgent Care and a Pharmacy at Ground Level.

Stopped by to see this old friend!

Located in this highly desirable suburb of Boston, this house located in Wellesley is undergoing a wholesale renovation. Many of the homes built in this town date back to the 1920s and earlier, with ceiling heights of 8 feet or lower. Our design moves the central entertaining spaces to the rear and side of the building… slipping out beneath the existing second floor. The new Kitchen, Dining, and Great Room areas will boast soaring ceilings of 11 feet in height.

Having a fun time designing a detached oversized two/car Garage for an Estate Home in Dover, MA. We designed three alternatives, this version is deeply rooted The Craftsman Style. Materials include stone, and bark siding in the gable end. Two other versions to follow in coming posts.

Over 30 years ago, I had the pleasure of working at CBT Architects and Pressley Associates Landscape Architects (with the late Bill Pressley) on the design of East Boston Piers Park - Phase I. The 10 million dollar project was funded by Massport. Bill was such a cooperative spirit, allowing me to significantly shape the Park Design to craft opportunities for architectural icons.

Clay Benjamin Smook, Architect designed several open-air and enclosed pavilion buildings and a series of eight of these “kiosks” (pictured here) constructed of pre-cast masts supporting lead-coated copper canopies. These were presented and approved over a series of public meetings. Clay conceptualized the structures as individual salutes to the Boston Skyline.

Came across this picture in a bankers box today. Grateful to have created these structures that are enjoyed by Bostonians & Tourist over the last 30 yrs and well into the future.
