The yellow shrub on every American front lawn has a smuggler's backstory.

His name was Robert Fortune. The British East India Company hired him in 1843 to enter the interior of China and bring back tea plants, which were a closed Chinese trade secret at the time. Fortune learned enough Mandarin to pass, shaved his forehead, attached a long braid, and traveled for three years through provinces that executed foreigners on sight.

He brought back roughly twenty thousand tea plants. He also brought back ornamental shrubs nobody in Europe or North America had ever seen, including Forsythia viridissima and the parents of Forsythia x intermedia, the hybrid that fills American suburbs every April.

The reason every forsythia in your neighborhood blooms within the same week traces to this. The genetic stock is incredibly narrow. Most cultivars sold today descend from a handful of those original Fortune introductions, crossed and re-crossed for over a century.

That genetic narrowness has a practical consequence. Forsythia has almost no disease pressure in cultivation, but it also produces almost no viable seed. Every plant you see was propagated from a cutting of a cutting of a cutting, going back to a stem Robert Fortune snapped off in a Chinese garden 180 years ago. [H3SBJ]
