I found… um… them, walking around in the bee yard today. This bee is a gynandromorph, the front half is female and the back is male.
Males (drones) don’t have stingers, so when the split goes this way they are nice to handle 🤣

Propolis, lots of it! My favorite breeder queen of the year likes a cozy winter home. They close off entrances to keep the wind and elements out. Seems to be a heritable trait, all her daughters and grand daughters do the same thing.

I’m pretty sure these girls were just trying to get a tan while looking for a new place to live. It was 95f and they were in full sun on that fence. Got them moved to a cooler place and they are happy!
