🛡️ Soil Compaction Prevention Tips for Carroll County, MD!
After this week’s rain, it’s super easy to accidentally compact your garden soil in Eldersburg — and once it’s packed down, roots struggle, water doesn’t drain, and plants suffer.
Save this infographic for your spring checklist 👇 Straight from UMD Extension!
✅ Never walk on wet soil
✅ Create permanent paths & use stepping stones
✅ Add compost & mulch every year
✅ Switch to raised beds or no-till
✅ Aerate gently with a garden fork (skip the rototiller!)
✅ Keep soil covered at all times
Pro tip: These steps are most important right now before the April 6 average last frost — protect your soil while you prune, clean up, and direct-sow those cool-season crops!
Which tip are you using first this weekend? Drop a comment and tag a gardening buddy who needs to see this!

🪴 Pruning & Cleanup 101 for Carroll County, MD!
It’s the BEST time right now in Eldersburg to get your garden ready for spring growth — before the April 6 average last frost and while plants are still mostly dormant.
Save this infographic for your weekend to-do list 👇 UMD Extension approved!
✅ Prune roses (cut to 15–18”)
✅ Cut back perennials & grasses
✅ Prune non-spring bloomers (butterfly bush, etc.)
✅ Gently rake debris (but skip wet soil!)
✅ Clean up herb beds
✅ Sanitize your shears
❌ DON’T touch spring bloomers like forsythia or lilacs yet!
Pro tip: Pruning now reduces disease and gives your plants a strong start. Grab those shears from your Essential Tools graphic and head outside after the rain passes!
Which pruning job are you tackling first this week — roses or perennials? Drop a comment and tag a neighbor who needs this!

1. Hand Trowel – Essential for transplanting seedlings once the ground thaws.
2. Gardening Gloves – Waterproof or leather – your hands will thank you!
3. Pruning Shears – Clean cuts on roses, perennials, and fruit trees.
4. Watering Can (or hose with gentle nozzle) – Keeps new plants happy without washing away soil.
5. Garden Rake – Clears leaves and prepares smooth seed beds.
6. Soil Thermometer – Critical in Maryland: cool crops at ~40–50°F, warm crops after 60°F.
7. Kneeling Pad – Comfort is key for those early spring weeding sessions!
8. Garden Fork – Loosens compacted winter soil and mixes in compost.
