Black Barn introduces a contemporary counterpoint to a traditional New England residence. Clad in charred wood siding inspired by the Japanese art of Shou Sugi ban, the structure’s smoky black exterior contrasts the white façade of the main house while maintaining a formal relationship through shared gabled forms. Connected by a flat-roofed entry and drop-off space, the two buildings create a dialogue between tradition and modernity.

Conceived as a subterranean extension to Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center Laboratory for Performance in Water Mill, New York, the project is immersed within the surrounding landscape, using light, materiality, and spatial restraint to shape a quiet, contemplative environment. Defined by monolithic concrete volumes punctured by skylights, the building draws natural light deep below ground, creating shifting atmospheres throughout the day. The library and performance spaces foster a sense of stillness and immersion, where architecture, landscape, and artistic practice exist in continuous dialogue.

Located steps away from the Atlantic Ocean, Surf Shack reimagines what a family beach property can be. Working within the footprint of an existing, 1,500-square-foot, shingle-style cottage, our design process was one of subtraction and reorganization.

The existing shingle volume anchors the site in its local vernacular, while new interventions on the site provide contemporary contrast and programmatic diversity. An elevated, pink Corian lap pool establishes a deliberate visual counterpoint to the textured cottage, its monolithic form and striking color intentionally chosen to reflect the sky’s hues at dawn and dusk.

To introduce more natural light into the cottage, we transformed the interior to become more of an open floor plan, and raised the roof. At the center of the plan, we inserted a compact, bunkbed core into one of the bedrooms, to accommodate up to eight children – a playful and efficient use of space.

A streamlined PanAmerica travel trailer is both a distinctive landscape feature, and a secondary residential volume. The trailer’s lightweight, riveted aluminum exterior makes the structure both visually and materially notable among the other forms. Each element of Surf Shack is given aesthetic autonomy within the overall composition, yet, they combine to relay a new, cohesive typology for beach-side family living.

Beyond the basic utility they provide, we conceive of staircases as central organizing elements and distinctive architectural statements — focal points that shape circulation, frame light and views, and mark the transition between a home’s public and private realms.

1 | For a contemporary art collector’s 82nd Street townhouse, we designed the first-ever eight-story, circular staircase built entirely of solid, white Corian. The staircase, twelve feet in diameter, had to be lowered into the townhouse through the roof because of its size, and is illuminated by the central skylight overhead.

2 | When restoring the townhouse of another New York City-based art collector, we regarded our design as the backdrop to the homeowner’s unique collection. A spiral staircase, accentuated by a wood bannister, winds through the interior, connects its various levels, and contributes a sense of craftsmanship to this sophisticated environment.

3 | In Greenwich, our interior renovation project included the construction of a modern glass-and-metal spiral staircase that links the lower-level screening room with the double-height library. The library contains a suspended glass-and-stainless-steel walkway that wraps the library’s perimeter, and visually echoes the staircase.

Last week in West Palm Beach, we celebrated the groundbreaking of Shorecrest with – a 28-story condominium building sited along one of South Florida’s most-coveted residential corridors.

Located at 1865 North Flagler Drive, Shorecrest is defined by a simple, legible form that reflects the relaxed, leisure-driven atmosphere of West Palm Beach. From afar, the building reads as a legible, cohesive shape, with the design revealing itself through the facade’s detailing, the materiality, and the boutique interiors.

Conceived as a vertically scaled, yet intentionally intimate, building, the tower is comprised of 98 two- and three-bedroom residences, with just four homes per floor. This limited density allows each residence to capture east- and south-facing water views. Floor-to-ceiling glazing brings in natural light and frames panoramic views of the Intracoastal Waterway and Palm Beach Island, while recessed private terraces – formed through indentations in the facade that also protect from coastal winds – function as fully usable outdoor rooms.

This connection between interior and exterior extends throughout the architecture, with lush vegetation from the ground-floor courtyard. Residences are designed as open, flowing spaces that prioritize daylight, long sightlines, and a seamless relationship to the outdoors.

With this residential interior renovation, we transformed a traditional home into a contemporary living environment, while retaining its architectural character. We blended the residence’s classic elements with modern features, such as a screening room, to create a refined and elegant experience.

The main entrance leads to a traditional wooden staircase, with a subtly curved form that complements the arched, wood doorframes surrounding the entryway. Beside the main entrance, the living room is anchored by a fireplace clad in stone and butternut, which creates visual cohesion across the interior’s wood accents and trims.

Within the double-height library, clad in butternut wood, a glass-and-metal spiral staircase connects to a glass-and-stainless-steel walkway that is suspended from the ceiling. The walkway wraps the library’s perimeter and provides access to the top shelves. The staircase also provides access to the lower-level screening room.

Millstone residence derives its name from the glacial stones scattered across Southampton, and the home translates both their solidity and elemental nature into architectural form.

The monolithic structure – composed of board-formed concrete, granite, and expansive glass panes – creates a dialogue between solidity and opacity, as it rests on a stone plinth. The glass facades provide expansive water views, and a mahogany roof floats above the structure, with 15-foot overhangs that help shade the home from harsh summer sun, while lending visual lightness.

The living spaces are organized along horizontal axes, with circulation and natural light deliberately choreographed to activate the interiors throughout the day, and maintain privacy in the evening.

A bridge traverses the residence and connects the second-story levels of the two adjacent wings. One wing contains the kitchen and guest suites, while the other contains the duplex master suite.
