The forest does not inhabit us - we inhabit it. It’s important to learn to coexist with nature, although we want to be safe too... so although we prefer to utilize our expertise in the endeavor to preserve trees, there are instances when tree removal becomes necessary. High-risk trees, over-mature trees in deep decline, or trees that simply have ceased to be an asset to the property are all potential candidates for removal. Whether it’s a tough climbing job in a remote area, or a large technical removal project with a lot of rigging or a crane, my team and I have the experience plus expertise to get the job done safely and without damaging the surrounding features.

trees shouldn’t look like telephone poles coming out of the ground? The practice of burying root flares of trees has become (has always been we have just been recently discussing it) an epidemic of tree malpractice in urban landscaping.

The root flare of a tree is the anchor of the tree. It should be exposed so that the tapered part of the trunk which meets the ground is visible being exposed to oxygen.
When a tree looks like a telephone pole coming out of the ground, the buttress roots of the root flare are buried which invites several serious problems to develop over time.

Fungal wood decay:
•Mounding mulch or soil at the base of a tree invites the development of fungal wood decay from the constant moisture held on the bark

Girdling roots:
•The constant moisture held on the bark from the mounding of soil or mulch at the base of the tree causes dormant buds to emerge from the bark of the buttress roots. girdling roots will grow parallel to the trunk and grow over the buttress roots of the tree. These girdling roots start out as small fibrous roots but quickly grown in length and girth. Girdling roots become restrictive in nature, choking on the vascular system of the tree while also causing severe abrasion on top of the buttress roots which can lead to fungal wood decay.

•Excavating the soil exposes a web of irregular and damaging girdling roots.
_These roots must be pruned and removed or they will continue to grow in girth which can restrict the vascular system of the tree

****After the Root Flare Exposure treatment:
__The base of the tree is clean of damaging girded roots and can now grow unharmed from girdling roots and fungal wood decay

A massive web of hair-like mushroom roots transmit secret messages between trees, triggering them to share nutrients and water with those in need. Like humans, trees are extremely social creatures, utterly dependent on each other for their survival. And, as it is with us, communication is key. After...

These are a few educational Memes I made to help educate people in general and homeowners. ——***Dirt at the base simply said suffocates the roots under the ground. Just adding 3-5 inches of new soil will definitely compacts the area and cut off aeration. So air and water pockets reduce in size; tree feeder roots cannot find the same amounts of oxygen and moisture before the soil was added. Roots may die back as a result of the decompressed soil, causing stress to the tree above. Pests and diseases that prey on stressed trees will get into the tree the tree and stress it more.
Buttress roots are important because they allow the tree to grow on thin soil and support tall trees from falling.
Which is why air spading and keeping the base clear is the most important physiological factor depicting the health of a tree is the status of the root flare at the base of the tree. It is very important that the root flare be free of soil, mulch that’s to high on the trunk***

Sincerely, your friendly neighborhood Arborists
