Oglebay Woodcarvers Guild

Oglebay Woodcarvers Guild This is a club for people of all ages who would like to learn about the amazing art of Wood Carving. Group meets twice weekly and everyone is welcome.

In November 1975, three men from Wheeling, West Virginia, found themselves driving to Steubenville, Ohio, to attend meetings of the Steubenville Smoking Woodcarvers Club. These men -- Bob Ligglebeck, Bill Zimmerman, and Irwin Zimmerman (no relation) – decided the monthly trip to Steubenville was not as fun as it had once been, and so they decided to form a local club. The generous people at the Og

lebay Institute provided the guys space in Tracy Hall on the campus of Wheeling College. Having an idea and a place to gather, Bob, Bill and Irwin placed an ad in the paper asking people interested in working with wood to attend their first meeting in early 1976. This first meeting of the Oglebay Woodcarvers Guild – named after the Oglebay Institute for their generous offer of a home for the Guild -- brought together 19 fellow carvers – and the Guild was formed. From these 20 or so people, the Guild has grown to over 100 members – about 45-50 of them active in the Guild on a regular basis. The Guild brings members from all over Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The distances members travel to attend the meetings doesn’t seem to matter. Members drive in from all over the place! Here is a list of a few of the places our members call home:

Barnesville
Bellaire

WEST VIRGINIA:

We promised an update—and here we are!

David Forester completed a beautiful chip carving of man’s best friend, and it’s truly something special. Chip carving continues to be a favorite among our members, and Lynn Schaal shared an intricate tree design on a decorative plate that really shows the artistry of this technique.

Of course, we also love our functional projects! Rich Beekman brought in handcrafted herb st*****rs, complete with notches that can also be used to safely push and pull an oven rack—practical and creative all in one.

Great work all around
