With the summer season upon us many home owners will be transforming their backyard areas by adding a deck or patio area!
A few things to consider when getting estimates from contractors:
* Post size; 4x4 post although a cheaper alternative to 6x6 are more likely to twist and warp over time
*Joist size; 2x6 joists typically are not strong enough to endure of time and will eventually bow under the weight of the deck, while using a minimum 2x8 joist will last much longer without sagging.
*Joist Crowning-Does your contractor know the proper way to crown the floor joist, all boards have a natural crown and it is important for the crown to be turned in the right direction.
*Joist spacing! Are you getting joist on 24” center or the recommended 16”
*Decking Installation- Does your contractor know how to correctly install the decking in order to prevent “cupping” overtime?
*Railing- what type of hand-railing are you being quoted in your estimate.
*Decking Material- Are you being quoted traditional treated deck lumber or a form of low maintenance composite decking.
Contractors will often quote the lesser of these in order to have the cheaper estimate and secure the project. ***Cheaper Is Not Always Best***
