Another public space bustling with life, the City of Tonawanda's DeeplyRooted Community Garden. Join us for monthly gatherings that offer training in skills ranging from fruit tree pruning to crafting with living willow; community potlucks; and tours of several young and maturing food forest guilds.

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday! We spent hours talking with neighbors about native plants, edible fruits and nuts, food forests, and more. Glad to see these trees and shrubs going home with such thoughtful growers. As always, feel free to to message with any questions as you think through how and where to increase the presence of native, edible plants in your life.

What's blooming in the bioswales? 🌱

This collection of beauties are bringing color, texture, and scents to Spring Street. As we continue to plant hundreds of new plants, enrich the soil by adding organic matter, and keeping everything moist during these hot days, we're enjoying these plant friends:

🌿Iris versicolor
🌿Fleabane
🌿Chokeberry
🌿Mountain mint
🌿Big bluestem

Introducing three of the species we will have with us this Saturday at Island Park: pawpaw, serviceberry, and nannyberry. We've profiled the features and growing conditions of each one, so neighbors can easily determine which plants will grow best in their space.

Still have questions? Send me a message and we'll figure out together what to plant where.

See you Saturday!

This weekend is packed with gatherings in Buffalo, from Gail V. Wells Day of Community at JFK Park on Saturday to Buffalo Pride Parade on Sunday! If you want to slip in some plant time, we will be joining the Village of Williamsville Earth Day/Arbor Day celebration this Saturday at Island Park, from 10am-1pm. We'll bring a selection of pawpaws, serviceberries, black cherries, and nannyberries for neighbors looking to add more native, edible plants to their life.

Looking forward to meeting friends old and new!

Berries and blooms around the food forest, late May:

Fat haskaps on our yezberry solo. A flavorful, cold-hardy alternative to blueberries for growers who don't want to maintain the acidic soil blueberries require.

Saturn peaches ripening, a strong producer every year.

Solomon's seal and wild ginger, both native plants with edible elements. We're waiting to harvest the young shoots of Solomon's seal and roots of wild ginger until the patch is more established.

Redbuds, another beautiful, edible native species.

Chokeberry flowers will form heavy black fruit by fall.

Nannyberry, full of blooms for the first time this year. The berry is a particular favorite of mine.

Our long, cool, wet spring has been ideal for growing out cover crops and acclimating plants to new homes.

Yesterday, we combined the two: we tamped down clover to allow young transplants access to sunlight. Even crimped, the clover will continue to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds (big thanks to our young friends who helped stomp the stalks down!).

What native plants to add to municipal spaces? For high-walled beds suited to tall plants, we planted yellow giant hyssop (agastache nepetoides), already blooming after being grown from seed this winter. For striking blooms and growth habit in a low-walled bed, we added sundial lupine (lupinus perennis subsp. perennis). Given the challenge of sourcing straight species seeds, we'll be keeping our eye on the number of leaves as it grows.

Last year's plantings continue to thrive, with a beautiful serviceberry (amelanchier alnifolia) and pearly everlasting (anaphalis margaritacea) putting on new growth.

Such a pleasure meeting so many of you as you've picked up pawpaws and more this past week! We've enjoyed long conversations about established, continuing, and brand new food forests, with sweet treats and kid play thrown in the mix, too.

A reminder to customers old and new: bring back your tree pots and you'll receive a credit toward your next plant. Let's close this loop together: I'll have another pot to grow with and you'll have another species to bring home (and another pot to return sometime later--the cycle continues!).
