A bloom of Camellia japonica 'Anemoniflora' flowering now, it has reached tree proportions in our garden. This is one of 6 camellias that William Macarthur brought to Australia aboard The Sovereign in 1831. Originally introduced from China in 1806, it bears distinctive anemone-form blooms that resemble the NSW waratah flower, Telopea speciosissima, and was widely used as a seed parent in early Australian hybridising. A tree growing in Camden Park is approaching 200 years of age. It makes me look at ours with great reverence. Camden Park, by the way, is open over the weekend of 19/20 September.
