As a tree guy, I notice things like number of acorns falling. Why would I do that? And what does that matter to you? Good question.

Generally, the fruit production of all trees is tied to many site factors and soil conditions. And fruiting amount is also cyclical in any given year. However, when mast (nut) producing trees yield a heavy crop in early Fall, it usually means a cold Winter is following. Not always, but usually. So, consider yourself warned. What you do with the information and how you prepare is now up to you.

Hey y'all. It has been a busy summer, hence the lack of posts. One thing that happened this summer was Wilson County Government conducted a property tax reevaluation. You may be asking, "What does that have to do with trees?"

I am glad you asked. If you own 20 acres or more of land that is not developed, you may qualify for a reduction in taxes based on "Present-Use Value". Typically, one of the requirements of this tax reduction is that you must have a Sound Forest Mangement Plan.

If you need a forest management plan, I can help you with that. I wrote numerous tax plans while working with the North Carolina Forest Service in Johnston and Chowan Counties.

Currently there is no wait, so turnaround time should be fairly quick. Reach out for more details.

The time has come! If you have not pruned your trees by now, don't! Trees are in a transition period now, coming out of winter dormancy. They are currently using all of their stored energy to produce leaves. Pruning them now would place them in under unnecessary stress, which could affect health. Wait until leaves are fully formed and "hardened off." Basically, wait end of May.

When the Wind Blows

We just survived two strong wind events in the past week. Have you ever thought what wind does to trees? Most probably automatically think wind breaks trees. That is a natural response, given the only time trees make the news is after they break. However, far more trees are strengthened by wind than broken by wind. So, here it what actually happens when the wind blows.

Wind exerts force on the tree causing a chemical/biological reaction within the trunk and roots. As branches sway with the wind, a message is sent down the trunk to tell the roots to grow, in the opposite direction. Basically, the tree lengthens it's anchor. Which each wind storm, most trees actually grow stronger. They adapt to their surroundings. Just as you and I or our pets do. The take away, please don't be afraid of trees.

Good morning all. I pray you made it through the severe weather yesterday without any incident. If you have trees down, I am available to assist* with clean up. If you have trees that were damaged and you would like an assessment, I can help with that as well.

*As long as the tree is not on your home. I neither have the equipment nor insurance for such work. Trees down in the yard are fair game.

Good morning, everyone! It has been forever since the last post. However, it is the first day of October, football is well under way, fairs and festivals are popping up everywhere, and there is a crispness in the air. This means Autumn, or as we call it down here, Fall is here. Fall is a very important time of year in the life of your trees. Therefore, I want to provide you with some very important information. First, the biological reason trees drop leaves. Leaves are the tree's way of eliminating understory competition (grasses), providing nutrients, and keeping roots (and local wildlife) warm during the winter. So, before you get out that noisy blower, consider helping the tree help itself stay healthy. Let leaves stay beneath the drip zone (branches) of your trees. Keep leaves away from the trunk. Why? You just said, "...let the leaves stay..." Good question. If you take a walk on the greenway or on a nature path, you will notice natural leaves typically do not pile up around the trunk. Leaves piled around the trunk can lead to decay and wood rot. If we will watch and learn how God takes care of the natural trees, we can mimic that in our yards and have healthy trees to provide us with cool summer shade. Hope this helps. Now go make some s'mores and enjoy your Fall.

SPRING COLOR: NC NATIVES

Most people think the season for tree color is Fall. However, Spring provides it's share of color as well. While most of the color comes from imported flowering trees, NC has some very colorful natives. For a few weeks now, you have probably seen the pictured trees. One of these trees is indeed Spring flowers, while the other is Spring seeds.

This is a good segway into the 2nd annual Arbor Day photo contest. Today, the first Friday after March 15, is the day NC celebrates Arbor Day. Therefore, beginning today you can email pictures of trees, you have taken to [email protected] for a chance to win a tree to plant. Pictures will be accepted through April 21, 2023. Other arborists will vote on the pictures and declare a winner. The winner will be presented with a tree to plant on National Arbor Day, April 28, 2023.
