Good morning, everyone! It has been forever since the last post. However, it is the first day of October, football is well under way, fairs and festivals are popping up everywhere, and there is a crispness in the air. This means Autumn, or as we call it down here, Fall is here. Fall is a very important time of year in the life of your trees. Therefore, I want to provide you with some very important information. First, the biological reason trees drop leaves. Leaves are the tree's way of eliminating understory competition (grasses), providing nutrients, and keeping roots (and local wildlife) warm during the winter. So, before you get out that noisy blower, consider helping the tree help itself stay healthy. Let leaves stay beneath the drip zone (branches) of your trees. Keep leaves away from the trunk. Why? You just said, "...let the leaves stay..." Good question. If you take a walk on the greenway or on a nature path, you will notice natural leaves typically do not pile up around the trunk. Leaves piled around the trunk can lead to decay and wood rot. If we will watch and learn how God takes care of the natural trees, we can mimic that in our yards and have healthy trees to provide us with cool summer shade. Hope this helps. Now go make some s'mores and enjoy your Fall.
