Late May is actually a perfect window to get new plants established before the summer heat really kicks in — but they need the right setup from the start. Overwatering is one of the most common ways new landscaping fails, and it's almost always avoidable with the right soil prep and drainage. At Cahley, we've worked on hundreds of backyards across Northern Virginia and we've seen what works — and what doesn't. Quick tip for anyone who has outdoor lighting or is thinking about adding it: pointing every light downward is the most common setup — and it's also the one that makes yards look the most forgettable after dark.

The trick is uplighting. A few well-placed fixtures aimed up into a tree, along a fence line, or washing across a stone wall creates shadow and dimension that downlighting simply can't. Your eye reads it as warmth and depth rather than just 'lights on.'

Warm white (2700K–3000K) is almost always the right call for residential outdoor spaces. Cool white reads as commercial and washes out the natural colors of plants and stone.

If you're just getting started, pathway lighting is the easiest win — it adds safety AND curb appeal and most systems are DIY-friendly. Happy to answer any questions about what works where.

Why your yard feels 'off' — and the easy fix most people overlook.

If you've ever looked at your backyard and thought 'something's not quite right' but couldn't put your finger on it, you're not alone. It's one of the most common things we hear.

Usually the culprit isn't the plants themselves — it's the lack of layering. A yard that reads as flat has everything at roughly the same height: low ground cover, a few medium shrubs, nothing else. Adding one layer of taller plantings or a structural element like a stone border creates instant depth and makes the whole space feel intentional.

Before you buy anything new, try this: stand at your back door and look at your yard in thirds — foreground, middle, background. Anything missing from one of those zones is usually where the 'off' feeling is coming from.
