After the earthquake that hit the Philippines, one image stood out to me deeply: an older church still standing, while a newer building beside it collapsed.

This contrast forces us to reflect. A building does not stand because it is new. A building stands because it was understood, designed, and constructed with responsibility.

In moments like this, the truth of construction is exposed. The soil, the structure, the materials, the foundation, the workmanship, the supervision, and the respect for seismic reality all become visible. What was ignored during construction becomes dangerous during disaster.

This is where education plays a key role in society. Construction is not only about putting blocks, concrete, steel, or finishes together. It is about understanding context. It is about knowing how a building should respond to the environment where it stands.

As professionals, we need to ask ourselves: are we really building for the place, or are we simply building to finish? Are we learning from the resilience of older buildings, or are we ignoring the lessons they still carry?

This reflection speaks strongly to Haiti. We know the pain of earthquakes. We know what happens when buildings are constructed without proper studies, without code enforcement, without professional supervision, and without respect for the land. Yet too often, we continue to build without enough consciousness.

The Philippines reminds us again that resilience is not optional. For Haiti, this lesson should be taken seriously. We cannot keep building as if beauty is enough. We cannot keep treating construction as a simple transaction. Every building is a responsibility toward the people who will live, work, pray, learn, or gather inside it.

The buildings of the past should not only be admired. They should be studied. Their logic, proportions, materials, and relationship to context can teach us. And with the knowledge we have today, we should be building safer, stronger, and more consciously.

Because when the earth shakes, it does not care how modern a building looks. It reveals how responsibly it was built.

And as professionals, when we fail to build with consciousness, we fail our communities.

Nan achitekti, anpil fwa nou redui fonksyonalite ak kesyon efikasite sรจlman- รจske espas la โ€œfonksyoneโ€ oswa non.

Men vrรจ sans fonksyonalite a ale pi lwen pase sa. Se yon espas ki fasilite lavi chak jou, diminye strรจs, adapte ak konpรฒtman moun, epi kreye konfรฒ atravรจ eksperyans moun ap viv ladan l.

Kรฒm itilizatรจ espas, nou souvan konsantre sou aparans: stil batiman dekorasyon, materyo chรจ, oswa imaj jeneral li bay. Men anpil espas ki bรจl pa rive sรจvi moun k ap viv ladan yo vrรจman.
Li enfliyanse fason nou deplase, repoze, kominike, respire, konsantre, epi santi nou nan yon espas

Bon achitekti pa sรจlman fรจt pou wรจ sรจlman, li fรจt pou viv atravรจ sans yo.

Yon batiman byen konsevwa amelyore lavi moun an silans, menm lรจ yo pa rann yo kont sa.

Enรจji, Achitekti, ak Avni Konstriksyon an Ayiti

Lรจ nou pale de enรจji nan konstriksyon, kesyon an pa ta dwe limite sรจlman ak panno solรจ.

Nan achitekti, fason yon batiman oryante, jan li pran van, limyรจ natirรจl, lonbraj, ak materyo yo itilize yo gen yon gwo enpak sou kantite enรจji li bezwen pou fonksyone.

Nan kontรจks tankou Ayiti, nou souvan chรจche solisyon rapid.

Si nou vle bati pi byen, kesyon enรจji a dwe kรฒmanse ak achitekti.

Kijan nou ka konsevwa espas ki travay avรจk klima a olye pou yo goumen kont li?

๐Ÿ”— Semรจn sa a, Club Architecture Club - Achitekti Haiti ap รฒganize yon diskisyon sou enรจji solรจ ak wรฒl li nan anviwรฒnman bati a. Yon bon okazyon pou nou reflechi ansanm sou avni konstriksyon an Ayiti.

Me kounye a mwen ap poze yon lรฒt kesyon ki pi fon:

Ki kote moun ann Ayiti sipoze pran souf?

Pa gen pak. Pa gen espas vรจt. Pa gen kote pou timoun jwe an sekirite. Pa gen kote pou kominote a reyini san presyon komรจsyal oswa sikilasyon.

Nou pral diskite sou sa nan Architecture Club - Achitekti Haiti an semรจn sa a. Men pou mwen, refleksyon an deja kรฒmanse.

Sometimes, what is most concerning in architecture is not what shocks us, but what no longer does.

I recently encountered a space in an airport where two toilet bowls were installed in the same room, without separation. What stood out was not the configuration itself, but how easily it had been accepted as normal.

This kind of spatial arrangement does not emerge from a single poor decision. It is the result of repeated practices- copied, transmitted, and rarely questioned. Over time, the absence of privacy becomes invisible, and dignity is treated as optional rather than fundamental.

In the Haitian context, these decisions are often shaped by urgency, cost constraints, limited oversight, and inherited building habits. But constraint alone does not explain the persistence of such practices.
Architecture, as lived experience, requires us to examine how design choices normalize certain conditions of living.

Gen fwa, sa ki pi grav nan achitekti a se pa sa ki choke nou, men sa nou vin abitye avรจ l.

Dรจnyรจman, mwen te wรจ yon espas nan yon epรฒt kote yo te mete de twalรจt nan menm chanm nan, san separasyon. Sa ki te frape m plis, se pa aranjman an li menm, men jan li te sanble nรฒmal pou tout moun.

ร’ganizasyon espas konsa pa soti nan yon sรจl move desizyon. Li soti nan pratik yo repete, yo kopye, yo transmรจt, san yo pa janm poze kestyon sou yo. Avรจk tan, absans vi prive a vin envizib, epi diyite vin parรจt kรฒm yon opsyon, olye de yon baz.

Nan kontรจks ayisyen an, anpil nan chwa sa yo sรฒti nan ijans, mank mwayen, mank kontwรฒl, ak abitid konstriksyon yo eritye.

Lรจ n ap konsidere achitekti kรฒm eksperyans vivan, nou oblije gade kijan desizyon konsepsyon yo fรจ sรจten kondisyon lavi vin parรจt nรฒmal.

Infrastructure often remains invisibleโ€”until it fails.

Roads, drainage systems, power networks, and water access quietly structure daily life, shaping who can move, who is protected, and who is exposed to risk.

In many contexts, including Haiti, infrastructure gaps are not accidental. They reflect long histories of uneven investment and political neglect. Architecture, when detached from infrastructure, risks becoming symbolic rather than functional.

Thinking about architecture as lived experience requires acknowledging that buildings do not stand alone. They rely on systems that either support or undermine everyday life.

Addressing inequality in the built environment demands a closer relationship between architectural design and infrastructural justice.

HOUSING & CARE
Housing is often discussed in terms of quantityโ€”units delivered, density achieved, costs reduced. Yet housing is first and foremost a space of care.

It is where bodies rest, recover, and carry daily life. For children, elders, and caregivers, the quality of housing directly shapes well-being.

In many contexts, including Haiti, housing must respond not only to climate and economy, but to extended family structures and shared responsibilities. These lived realities are rarely captured by standardized housing models.

Viewing housing through the lens of care shifts architectural prioritiesโ€”from efficiency alone toward dignity, adaptability, and long-term resilience.

Concrete, wood, metalโ€”none of them are neutral. They hold histories of labor, climate, economy, and care. The same material can signal permanence in one place and precarity in another.

In Haiti, concrete often represents durability and protection, even when it limits adaptability or thermal comfort. In other contexts, lighter materials are embraced for flexibility and climate responsiveness.

These choices are never only technical. They are shaped by experience, trust, and what people believe will last.

Thinking about architecture as lived experience requires asking not just what materials perform best, but what they mean to the communities who build with them.

Yo pote istwa travay, klima, ekonomi, ak swen. Menm materyo a ka vle di pรจmanans nan yon kote, epi frajilite nan yon lรฒt.

An Ayiti, beton souvan senbolize solidite ak pwoteksyon, menm lรจ li limite adaptabilite oswa konfรฒ tรจmik. Nan lรฒt kontรจks, materyo pi lejรจ yo chwazi pou fleksibilite ak adaptasyon ak klima.

Panse achitekti kรฒm eksperyans vivan mande pou n mande:

Today, architecture feels less like form and more like protection.
Thresholds matter. Insulation becomes care. Orientation becomes survival.

Experiencing winter in New England often sharpens how I think about place. In Haiti, architecture negotiates heat and airflow; here, it negotiates cold and enclosure. Both are climate responses, but they produce entirely different spatial and social behaviors.

Climate is not just a technical constraintโ€”it shapes how people move, gather, and feel protected.

Jodi a, achitekti pa tรจlman sou fรฒm, men sou pwoteksyon.
Papรฒt yo vin pi enpรฒtan. Izolasyon tounen swen. Oryantasyon tounen kesyon siviv.

Viv sezon ivรจ nan New Egland toujou fรจ m reflechi sou plas ak kontรจks. An Ayiti, achitekti ap negosye chalรจ ak vantilasyon; isit la, li ap negosye frรจt ak fรจmti. Tou de se repons ak klima, men yo pwodui konpรฒtman espasyal ak sosyal ki diferan.

Klima pa sรจlman yon kestyon teknik โ€” li fรฒme fason moun deplase, reyini, epi santi yo pwoteje.
