Meet Darkibor kale: a tall, curly kale variety I absolutely adore! I cannot have a garden without kale.

Its lovely texture is gorgeous in the garden and in salads. But here’s the secret: kale gets sweeter as it gets colder! Keep it in the garden as long as possible and harvest leaves in late November or December for the sweetest crunch.

Beauty AND flavor that improves with frost!

One stunning native perennial for Illinois that shows off at the end of April: Bluebells!

Beautiful delicate leaves with amazing little bell-shaped flowers that draw in pollinators. Just know it has a spreading habit, so plant it somewhere with boundaries!

Native beauty at its finest!

There are tons of lettuce varieties, but here’s why I personally love Kweik Buttercrunch Lettuce!

It doesn’t get leggy like other lettuces that stretch toward light. Stays nice and compact, pumps out amazing green crunchy leaves, and continuously supplies you until temps hit upper nineties!

Want a no-fuss vegetable that handles temperature swings and grows prolifically? Swiss chard is your answer!

Sprout it early in the season, no bug issues, handles cold or hot weather beautifully. Young leaves are perfect for salads, older stalks get thick like celery (sauté those first, then toss greens in at the end!).

One tip: keep it high enough away from rabbits! Those bunnies love munching the leaves!

Everyone plants the same tomatoes and peppers, but here’s a hidden gem you might not know exists: Chijimisai!

This Asian green is stunningly beautiful, heat tolerant, doesn’t bolt in ninety-degree weather, and is absolutely delicious in stir fries!

Stop planting the same old things and try this!

One thing you’re probably not growing because you don’t even know it exists: Tokyo Bekana Asian Greens!

It germinates amazingly, grows so quickly, and continuously pumps out greens the more you harvest outer leaves. Look at this guy, basically ready to harvest already!

Absolutely worth adding to your garden space!

Here’s a gorgeous perennial you might not know about! Creeping phlox is a low ground cover that cascades beautifully over edges and walls.

Right now at the end of April in Chicago, it’s at peak bloom and absolutely stunning! Just partner it with summer bloomers because after this show, it looks like a mossy green carpet.

Perfect for borders with walls or edges!
