People ask me just what I do as a handyman. It's hard to explain. People call me or email me with a problem. I view the problem and suggest what I think should be done to solve their problem...
I don't usually take pictures, as when I'm on the clock, all I'm doing is working to get the customer the best value for my time on the job site.
This current job is a good example of the kind of things that are done to "Solve a problem."
Customer called and said, "The bedroom door is broken, it needs to be fixed." After looking at the door, all of the screws affixing the hinge to the door had come out. I measured the door and rough opening. 77x29.5. No shops around stock a door that size, and if I were to rip (cut) a door to size, a hollow core door would be too small as they're only supposed to be trimmed 1/4" on each side. The closest size was 78x30...
The door installed had been cut too small to make it fit. There was no top to the door, and the hinge side had been trimmed so much there was almost nothing to screw to. I talked with the customer and suggested I fix the existing door. This way she wouldn't have to custom order a door, or attempt to change the door frame size to fit a common size door.
I added wood on the inside of the hinge side, glued it and secured it with trim screws. I then removed the sound deadening foam from the top of the door to glue in a top. Where the side of the door had cracked and/or broken I glued and clamped...
The pictures on this post illustrate the process thus far. After the glue dries will be wood filler to fill the holes, sanding, then paint.
The problem solving is my favorite part of the job. I solved a puzzle to satisfy a customer's wants or needs.
