HVAC systems in Florida heat

🏚️ Older HVAC systems (10–20+ years)

Older systems usually still “work,” but they struggle in Florida heat + humidity levels or current efficiency standards.

Common issues:

* Runs longer to cool the same space (higher electric bill)
* Weak humidity control → house feels “sticky”
* Uneven cooling (hot rooms, cold rooms)
* More frequent repairs (capacitors, fan motors, refrigerant leaks)
* Uses older refrigerants that are expensive or being phased out

What helps most:

* Change filters more often (every 3–4 weeks in summer)
* Keep thermostat steady (avoid big temperature swings)
* Have coils cleaned 1–2x per year (huge efficiency boost)
* Seal duct leaks if possible (older homes often lose 20–30% air)
* Don’t overwork it: 74–76°F is usually the realistic comfort range in peak heat

🦮🐈‍⬛ Pets and HVAC systems don't always get along; hair, dander, and dirt can quietly wreck airflow and air quality if you're not on top of it.

The good news is a few habits make a big difference:

• Change air filters often (every 1-2 months)
• Use good quality filters (MERV 8-13)
• Vacuum and clean pet hair regularly
• Keep vents and returns clear
• Groom pets to reduce shedding
• Protect outdoor unit from pet damage
• Schedule yearly HVAC maintenance

Small habits make a big difference—improving indoor air quality and helping your system last longer.👍🏽

🚨HVAC TIPS🚨

Your outdoor HVAC unit (condenser) needs free airflow to work properly. When leaves, dirt, or debris build up around it, a few problems happen:

1. It traps heat 🔥
The unit’s job is to release heat from inside your home to the outside air. If it’s surrounded by debris, that heat gets “stuck,” so the system can’t cool efficiently.

2. It makes the system work harder
Blocked airflow = the unit runs longer to reach the same temperature.
That means:
* Higher electric bills
* More wear and tear on parts

3. It can cause overheating
If airflow is really restricted, the system can overheat and even shut down to protect itself.

4. Dirt gets pulled inside the unit
Leaves and dust can clog the coils (the metal fins), which reduces efficiency even more and may require professional cleaning.

5. Shortens system lifespan
Constant strain on the compressor (the most expensive part) can lead to early failure.

Simple rule:
Keep at least 2–3 feet of clear space around the unit and check it regularly, especially in Florida where debris and plants grow fast.

HVAC TIPS

💧Prevent Drain Line Clogs (Big in Florida!)
• Your AC removes a lot of moisture → clogged drain lines are super common
• Flush the drain line monthly with vinegar to prevent algae buildup
• Install a float switch to shut off the system if it backs up (prevents water damage)
