This week's plant spotlight: American Sycamore
The American Sycamore is one of the tallest deciduous tree in the Eastern US and can live 400+ years. Sycamore trees are in decline due to a devastating fungal disease, but are an important component of healthy bottomland forest ecosystems. Native to Pennsylvania, along with the rest of the eastern United States, pictured here is Conoclinium coelestinum (a.k.a., Blue Mistflower), a member of the aster family (Asteraceae).* Growing up to three feet tall, the species is often “found in the coastal plain growing along roadsides on moist ditch banks.”* ** Preferring moist soil, the species generally prefers part shade to full sun. * *** When cultivated in the home garden, “it it becomes a choice perennial with 8 weeks of blue flowers from late summer until frost. It is nectar-rich and pollinators love it.”* To that end, “[t]his is a great plant to consider for a wildflower garden or naturalized area, does especially well around pond borders as long as spreading roots will not affect other plants [as it can spread aggressively via rhizomes and self-seeding].”*
