Some background on the owner:

Joe Mages was raised in rural southern Minnesota. As a teenager he worked for a company that flipped houses and with that began dabbling in landscaping and hardscaping. In that time he developed a love for working outside and improving homes. However, at this point he was very much an amateur and was learning some valuable, hands-on, mistake-filled, lessons. Joe went on to college to get a degree in Civil Engineering from NDSU in Fargo. While finishing school and searching for jobs in his degree he worked full time for a landscaping company in Fargo before taking a job with the North Dakota Department of Transportation. After some time working as a soils and concrete technician with the NDDOT he knew landscaping was where his passion was really at. He enrolled at the Minnesota State Technical College and received a Landscape and Garden Center Technician diploma which furthered his education in things like landscape design, garden center operations, and horticulture. Then Joe seeked out the top premier landscape companies in Fargo and was fortunate to land a job with his top choice, award-winning Signature Landscapes. http://www.signaturelandscapes.us/

Joe spent multiple seasons learning from the best in the region and working into a project manger position. He even had a hand in a 2015 NDNGA award winning project as a co-designer and installer. The project was built in his final season with the company. In late 2013, Joe had a bittersweet moment in deciding to move back to the region to be closer to family and start one of his own. Not being able to give up landscaping, he started Evolve Landscaping and is a co-owner with his wife Imia Mages.

I've neglected posting a lot of my projects to social media lately, but this beauty I had to share.

Added a shoreline wall to stop erosion and reduced runoff from lawn to lake by adding rock and plants on the downhill. By adding rock to the inside of the firepit area, we kept our square footage under the county allowance, and it added some interest. Can't wait to come back in a few years to see the plants all filled in.

Landon Uhde has been working hard on his Eagle Scout project at the Lafayette MN memorial park the last few days with me. Tomorrow August 8th from 8am-noon we are looking for volunteers to help put in the granite memorial pavers that will be lining the sidewalk and around the flagpole.

Landon has been an excellent worker and quickly earned my referral should he need it in the future. I know he can do it on his own but the extra hands make light work.

Bring yourself, a water and maybe some gloves. Supervisors welcome too!

City of Lafayette MN is working on a park project! They want to add memorial pavers honoring both the area veterans and civilians.

I've been happy to donate the computer renderings for the project and will potentially be hired to work with an area Eagle Scout on the install next year. But first they need names for the pavers. The pavers can be etched with the names of civilian donors, names in memoriam of civilians, veterans past and veterans still with us today, with some connection to Lafayette area. The veterans will be honored in their own area around the flagpole.

I added some rock earlier this year to the Veteran's Walking Path of Honor in Memorial Park in Arlington MN. They have similar memorial that I encourage a visit to.

Order forms are available on the city website https://www.lafayettemn.com/, or at the city office, Citizens Bank, or any Legion member. Questions contact: Mark Schuelke 507-720-437one or Neal Hoffmann 507-276-144four.

Another Saturday community project in the books! Thanks to all the volunteers from American Lutheran in Ga***rd. They were working hard to put down 50 tons of new rock around their church. They had already hauled off old rock, plants and sod in previous weeks. We re-used the existing edging around most of the church. Thanks to Haggenmiller Lumber for donated fabric and some new edgers for the front. Many hands makes light work. 💪💥✝️

Finished a couple patriotic projects this week in time for Memorial day. A rock border project for Veteran's Walking Path of Honor in Memorial Park in Arlington and a residential flag pole and block bed in Winthrop that's flying a stiched Vietnam era flag in memory of a loved one. It's this part of the job I like the most.

EAB has been circling the Winthrop area in recent years and it is starting to get real close. It's been confirmed all over the MN River Valley. Dutch Elm Disease swept through MN 50 years ago and Green Ash was a common replacement. We have some 15,000-50 000 Ash trees in Sibley County. EAB can be treated if noticed early or preemptively. By the time the wood peckers make the problem obvious, it can be too late. If you have a crown jewel Ash tree in the yard, I'd stop by RCNursery. If you have a whole yard of ash trees, I'd suggest getting a few saplings of a different species started in case you lose the whole group within the next decade.

This ash tree is an example of one already infested with emerald ash bore. If the woodpeckers are removing the bark from your ash trees, that is a sign that you already have the ash bore in your tree. The reason they are removing the bark is to eat the larvae of the ash bore that lives immediately underneath the bark layer. If you see this sign on your tree, it may be too late to treat it and the recommendation would be to cut it down. If you would like to treat your tree to prevent the emerald ash bore from killing it, stop down to River Creek Nursery and we can recommend a treatment plan for you.

Beat the rain today at the Green Isle Vets memorial with this group of volunteers! Thank you Diane, Mary, Ronnie, Rollie, and Mike. Thanks Vos Construction for the equipment.

We had to nix our SERVICEberry trees unfortunately due to improper soil conditions but we kept the Northwind grasses and red coral berries. The grasses will grow tall, strong and line the sidewalk, meant to represent the vets still standing. The red coral bells are to represent the blood spilt.

The memorial also has plaques recognizing civil service such as the firefighters, police and paramedics. So it felt right we install on Patriot Day. So most of all, thanks to those who served!
