Extended drought conditions and lower water levels around Smith Mountain Lake may begin exposing shoreline root systems and changing soil conditions around mature trees.
As water levels drop, some shoreline trees can experience:
• Exposed root systems
• Soil shifting and erosion
• Reduced root stability
• Increased stress during summer heat
• Higher vulnerability during storms and high winds
Many trees may still appear healthy from above while structural stress develops below the surface.
⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR SHORELINE PROPERTY OWNERS:
Before ANY shoreline tree work is performed, homeowners should first check with Appalachian Power Company (APCO) regarding shoreline management regulations and permit requirements.
APCO shoreline restrictions may include:
• Restrictions on disturbing vegetation within 800 feet of the shoreline
• Limitations on tree removal in shoreline management zones
• Requirements for erosion control and shoreline stabilization
• Permit requirements for certain shoreline activities
• Replanting or mitigation guidelines after vegetation removal
🌲 Call Arbor Docs for a FREE shoreline tree inspection and let us help identify hidden stress, exposed root concerns, erosion risks, and storm vulnerabilities before summer weather makes them worse.
