Over 450 tulips planted for next spring 💐

Fall planting is officially underway at Taylored Acres, and this bed is all about spring cut flowers. I planted over 450 tulips which are destined for spring bouquets.

I'm using the trench method for these — instead of digging individual holes for each bulb, I dig one long trench, line the bulbs up close together, and cover them back up. When you're planting hundreds of bulbs at once, it's so much faster and more efficient. I'm not worried about proper spacing on these as they have all of the energy they need to make a flower in the bulb already and they are going to be treated as an annual.

The two I'm the most excited about are both from Colorblends :

🌷 **Metamorphic™** — a late-blooming blend of purple, rich pink, and blush white doubles, 16 to 20 inches tall. I can't wait to see those colors together.
🌷 **Queensland** — fringed *and* double, and bicolored red with white, 14 to 16 inches tall, blooming mid-to-late. ColorBlends calls it "vase-worthy," which is exactly what I'm looking for in a cut flower.

Now these beds rest through winter, and the real payoff comes next spring when I get to start harvesting.

What's your favorite color of tulips?

Why I plant winter rye at Taylored Acres 🌾

I plant winter rye in the fall, after my annuals have succumbed to a frost. I just sprinkle the seed on the surface, sometimes rake it in or add a bit of compost on top — it just needs moisture to germinate.

Once it sprouts, it sends roots deep into the ground and keeps growing through winter, taking up nutrients and holding them in the soil instead of letting them wash away.

Winter rye is one of the best cover crops for this job because it:
• Scavenges excess nitrogen and holds it until spring
• Prevents erosion with its extensive, soil-holding root system
• Adds organic matter to the bed
• Suppresses weeds — both by outcompeting them and naturally, through allelopathy
• Is the hardiest cereal cover crop, so it can be planted later in fall than most others and still germinate in cold soil, as low as 34°F

In spring, it *does* have to be terminated. I cut it down and leave it on top as organic matter and a green mulch, then cover it with black plastic for 2 weeks to kill it before I plant again.

It's not a crop I harvest — it's a crop that works for my beds all winter long.

Do you cover crop your garden beds in fall?

Throwback to last week 💐

My cousin asked me to make her bouquet for her wedding in Tucson next month ❤️ Of course I'm so excited for this honor that I've been practicing with the final flowers of the season from last week!

It is full of garden style flare in the muted tones that have been beautiful all season!

Just watching this makes me miss my flowers already 😢

Shopping for amaryllis bulbs? Here’s what I look for!

Anyone who's been following for awhile know how obsessed I am with Amaryllis 💓

I stopped by Home Depot to check out their amaryllis selection, and I’m sharing a few things I look for when choosing bulbs for winter blooms.

Here are my tips for picking a good one:

**Look for a larger bulb.** Generally, the bigger the bulb, the more stored energy it has to support flowering. Larger, healthy bulbs may also produce multiple flower stalks.

**Check the bloom stalk.** I like to see a flower stalk just barely emerging from the bulb. It gives me a peek at what’s happening without the flowers being too far along.

**Inspect for red blotch fungus.** I avoid bulbs with red blotches on the flower stalk or leaves, as these can be signs of red blotch fungus.

**Look at the leaves, too.** If leaves are already emerging, check them for discoloration, damage, or red streaks.

**Buy bulbs you can actually inspect!** If the amaryllis is packaged in a box or another container that hides the bulb, flower stalk, and leaves, I prefer to pass. I want to see what I’m bringing home before I buy it!

Amaryllis are such a fun way to bring some color indoors during our long Wisconsin winters. A little extra time choosing your bulb can help you start with the best possible plant. And the best part is you can save them for reblooming every year!

Have you grown amaryllis before, or will this be your first year? Let me know in the comments!

🚜💐 Tucking the trailer in for its winter nap! ❄️

The flower stand is officially calling it a season, and it’s time to get everything tucked away until spring. It’s a little bittersweet saying goodbye to another growing season, but we’re already dreaming about what next year will bring at Taylored Acres. 🤍

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, supported our little flower stand, and made this season so special.

Until then, the trailer will be cozy in the shed, dreaming of flowers. 💤

Dahlia digging, dividing, and storage 🌸

If you grow dahlias, you know there's a little (or a lot) work to do at the end of the season to get those tubers ready for next year!

I put together a complete video walking through my entire process, from digging the clumps out of the ground to dividing and storing them for winter. I also share the plastic-wrap storage method I've been using successfully for the past several years. It is worth mentioning that I have also had success with just digging dahalias up and putting them in a pot in my 60° dark basement for winter as well. Long story short, they cannot freeze!

Whether you're digging your first dahlia clump or you've been growing dahlias for years, I hope this gives you a resource you can come back to whenever you need it!

I know there are lots of different ways to divide and store dahlias, and I hope you find a method that works for you. 🌱
