Steel cabling is a legitimate tree preservation tool.

The real challenge is ensuring that it is prescribed appropriately and the crew performing it has enough technical knowledge and training to install them properly. We see SO many steel cables that are incorrectly installed, or an inappropriate solution. We know that the intention is well-meaning, but we all know that good intentions do not guarantee good outcomes unfortunately.

Tree species, age, circumstances, location, height of install, angles, pretensioning, hardware selection... and more. All things that have to be factored in when prescribing and installing steel cabling in order for it actually to be a value add versus a tree ornament or even leaving the tree in worse condition.

This is why we are constantly training and learning. So that when we prescribe and execute steel or dynamic cabling, we know our clients are getting the most accurate information and can trust that it is truly the best solution and that it is installed correctly.

Deadwood removal on a mature pin oak — and for arborists, you already know what that means. IYKYK..... 😬

For everyone else, just know this is not a beginner job. Pin oaks are one of the most demanding canopies to work in, and proper deadwood removal at this height and scale takes real skill.

Trees remember every cut they’ve ever received.

This silver maple has been carrying this cavity for years, the result of a large removal cut that was too much for the tree to seal over. No blame, just biology.

It’s one of the reasons modern arboriculture has moved toward smaller, more strategic cuts. We want to work with how trees heal, not against it!

Don't make the mistake of measuring the quality of your tree care by the quantity of material you see on the ground or "how different" the tree looks after! A bigger pile of brush doesn’t mean a better job.

Let's hope the rigging can handle that... 😉

Entire spar loaded well in compression, slack drawn out as quickly as possible, rope that has higher elongation percentages....

Building bullet proof rigging so you have margin for error.
