Phoenicia Festival of the Arts Returns for 3rd Annual Celebration
August 28 – September 1, 2025 | Labor Day Weekend | Phoenicia, NY

Phoenicia, NY – The 3rd Annual Phoenicia Festival of the Arts returns this Labor Day Weekend, bringing five vibrant days of creativity, community, and celebration in the scenic town of Phoenicia, NY. From Thursday, August 28 through Monday, September 1, the town-wide festival showcases visual arts, installations, performances, and community engagement workshops in venues and all along Main Street throughout the picturesque Catskills hamlet. Presented by VARGA Gallery & Studio, the event focuses on collaboration as the Phoenicia Festival of the Arts transforms the little hamlet into a living gallery in the stunning backdrop of the Catskill Mountains, celebrating the power of creativity and connection.

New This Year: Phoenicia Gets a Public Mini Golf Course

The 3rd Annual Phoenicia Festival of the Arts will unveil an ecologically minded, upcycled mini golf public art installation in Parish Field Park. Spearheaded by Christina Varga, the course reimagines “Lucid Dreaming: In Search of Lost Time” originally created by Brendan Bo O’Connor and Liam Singer previously exhibited at O+ Festival, ArtPort Kingston, Basilica Hudson, Rubulad Brooklyn, Opus 40, Athens Cultural Center and more. Donated by O’Connor and Singer “in the hopes they can help seed other projects of whimsy and joyful minigolf absurdity” the course is being reimagined in collaboration with Varga, bio-artist Adam Zaretsky of BEAK (Bio Ethical Advisory Kommission) ) and Kurt Boyer (Boyer Signs). The official ribbon cutting ceremony to present the course to the Town of Shandaken will take place on Friday, August 29 between 4- 5pm at Parish Field, honoring the many individuals who contributed to making this community project possible.

“The original Lucid Dreaming courses were donated in hopes they would seed new acts of whimsy and joy,” said O’Connor. “We’re thrilled to see this dream take root in Phoenicia.” The mini golf course will flank the Tanbark Trailhead - a beloved hiking destination offering sweeping views of the Catskills in Parish Field Park - and be nestled beside the Tanbark Nature Play Area designed by Autumn Brookmire. “This project merges public play with artistic storytelling and an ecological consciousness,” says Varga. “Through upcycled materials, crowdsourced putters and balls and generous volunteer support, it lives at the intersection of Art and Community.” The course will be open to the public through Shandaken Parks & Recreation with equipment available to check out at The Nest Egg, Phoenicia Library, VARGA Gallery, and other local businesses. This will be Ulster County and indeed New York State's very first free community mini golf course for the public's enjoyment.

“The arts and culture are a key growth industry in Ulster County and have a huge impact on communities and their residents,” Varga enthuses. “They’re integral to attracting diverse audiences, building a creative economy, and improving mental and physical well-being. The festival supports the local businesses while positively influencing quality of life for our residents, drawing tourism and fueling economic vitality.”

Film at the Phoenicia Playhouse: Identity, Art & Discovery

New this year, the festival launches a film program in partnership with the Phoenicia Playhouse, presenting three powerful films that explore themes of identity, culture, and transformation:

The Gender Symphony by Phoebe Legere - A playful, poignant blend of commedia dell’arte, hand-drawn animation, and original music that explores “Politics of the Body.” Featuring Ivan Galietti (Fellini’s Casanova), Lorenzo Pozzan (Q***r, 2024), and Legere herself (Toxic Avenger, Mondo New York), the film uses costumes crafted from paper and found objects, and an award-winning score that fuses hardcore rock, experimental electronica, and Felliniesque circus music.
“The Gender Symphony is a magical tale... a deeply human exploration of growth, understanding, and the unpredictable alchemy of self-discovery.” – Indie Film Blog

Mixed Messages by Kathy Brew - An experimental video collage that incorporates found footage, performance, interviews with young girls, documentary, animation, images from advertising and television, and a dream narrative in a work that examines gender-stereotyping in popular culture, concluding with a post-modern version of the Pandora myth.
“Kathy Brew’s experimental Mixed Messages (1990) is a potent and timely work of media criticism that takes on gender stereotyping in the media..." From Hyperallergic, February 7, 2020

The Long Path: A Journey of Becoming by Shai Ben-Dor
A powerful documentary following Kim Levinsky’s 358-mile FKT (Fastest Known Time) on New York’s Long Path—chronicling a raw journey through mental health, healing, self-discovery, and the power of community.

Art All Around: Exhibits, Installations & Yarn Bombing

After the ribbon cutting ceremony at Parish Field, Friday evening continues with the annual Art Invitational reception at 6pm on the Boardwalk at VARGA Gallery at 60 Main Street to celebrate the art events and installations:
