In the process of repotting a plant the other day into a more interesting pot… I came to the conclusion that I am a bit of a “pot” snob. I hate boring pots. You know the kind..all function no flair. The kind that are a bit blah and underwhelming. I tend to judge a plant largely based on how it looks in its pot.
This simple realization led me down a whole line of hard questions…
Do I tend to judge and critique people the same way? Do I look at their “pot,” their outward appearance and make a determination as to whether or not they measure up? Do I look at their exterior and decide whether or not I want to get to know them? Do I look at the outer cover and make a personal judgment about what their life is like?
I kind of stepped on my own toes with this line of thinking…
Because in all honesty I started to wonder…How many times have I judged someone from their outward appearance and just stopped there. They look well put together so their life must be perfect, right? No health concerns, no financial issues…they have it made.
Or maybe the outward appearance was a bit messier…not quite as put together and again I stopped there. With a bit of criticism I thought….why don’t they take better care of themselves?
Thoughts and judgments like these can be misleading, because in truth outward appearances can be deceiving. That person who is so put together on the outside might be silently struggling with an addiction, depression, or a painful divorce.
The one who doesn’t look quite so put together may truly care how they look, but might be struggling with grief and it takes all they’ve got just to get through the day.
Truth is…many of us have stopped at the exterior of a person and judged them based on our own preconceived notions about who we think they are and what we think their life is like. We judge them by their “pot.”
Yet, in all honesty, do we really have the right to judge them based on outward appearances if we haven’t taken the time to really see them? Have we stopped to listen to their story, learned about their hurts, their hang ups, their struggles, their fears? Have we taken the time to really lean into them and get to know them? To support them?
The hard truth is that I know I haven’t always done a good job of taking the time or making the effort to truly see people. I sometimes get wrapped up in me….
However, just think how much better things would be if we all made an honest effort… if we all slowed our pace a bit… if we all looked past outward appearances… if we all looked past ourselves for a while…if we all took the time to really see those around us…if we all took the time to care…if we all took the time to help fill a need… if we all took the time to do what really matters…..
In a sense, wouldn’t the world be a better place if we all just took the time to smell the roses?
