Hantavirus has hit the news and you may not have heard of it before.
Hantavirus is rare, but dangerous.
Here are some basics about Hantavirus:
• Rodents carry Hantavirus – people are exposed through contact with rodent urine, droppings, and saliva, commonly through contact with nesting materials, more rarely through a bite or scratch.
• Hantaviruses are a family of viruses found around the world – only one type can be spread from person-to-person, the Andes virus, which is spread to humans through rats found in Argentina and Chile.
• Hantavirus is dangerous because it causes hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), which affects the lungs, and can be deadly.
In Colorado, the most common carrier of hantavirus is deer mice and people are exposed when they clean out spaces where mice have nested. There are safety measures to take when cleaning to reduce chances of breathing contaminated air. Please visit the Hantavirus pages at CDC.GOV for information about prevention, cleaning, and safely caring for pet rodents.

🚨Attention Yuma County residents, some areas of Yuma County experienced large amounts of rain in a short period of time. There was potential flash flooding in some low areas. Please be mindful of the County Roads that may be washed out or damaged.

If you’re driving and see a large washout or a damaged road please report it to dispatch 970-848-0464. So Yuma County Road and Bridge can be notified.

If there is water running across the road at a fast pace, remember turn around don’t drown. 🚨
