Thank you to the community for all your kind words and support. We miss you too, and will be forever grateful for the many years spent growing flowers at the greenhouse. It was a work of the heart, and we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to serve our local community for so many years. What an amazing experience.

We will be keeping the Lizzie’s Garden website active as an education resource and communications platform. In addition our page will continue as a place to share plant ideas and conversations.

With the continued uncertainty arising from the Covid pandemic, we will not be investing in our usual seasonal crops , including poinsettias. Instead, we are shifting our business to operate seasonally only at this time. We will be open until July 1st, and will keep you posted on when we will reopen.

We will work on maintaining our website and can continue communicating with our loyal plant enthusiasts through email at [email protected] or through our website.

Take care everyone and have a great summer!

Virginia Bluebells, an Illinois native, has delicate nodding blue flowers arising from straight stems and watery green leaves. Surrounded by unfurling ferns, it is a delightful scene of spring.

Indeed, as spring progresses, the ephemeral plant retreats and falls back to the soil, only to come back the following year. It’s transitive nature makes it that much more of a celebration when it is in full bloom.

Native plants and their unique characteristics and survival mechanisms are fascinating.

We have Virginia Bluebells available.

For those of you “Impatien “ with all this Covid stuff, here’s some colorful relief. We have our fancy Impatiens baskets hanging up with no place to go.

So..... we will display the baskets for drive by viewing today and tomorrow, weather permitting, from 1-4 pm in the driveway of the wholesale entrance.

If a basket strikes your fancy, just call 630-904-1066 and let us know. We can take a credit card payment safely over the phone.

Here are our basket models showing off some beauties. We have red, light pink, hot pink, orange, purple, white, lavender, and mixed colors.

Please “spread” the word!

Here is an early spring container made with stocks in the center, flanked by two osteospermum ( the pink daisies) and ringed by a cascade of bacopa, lobularia, and pansies. Tucked in between the stock and other plants is a young 4 Pak of snap dragons for intermediate height and added color. This design will carry through until the hottest weather, when plants can be switched, moved around, or replaced.

These plants thrive in our cool days, but still need protection against a cold frost.(A light sheet works fine.) Weeks of happiness can be had for just a few minutes of the effort of planting.

Here is a sampling of some of our hanging baskets that are now ready. There are petunias, geraniums, lobelia, impatiens, mixed combinations, and scaevola.

The best thing about hanging baskets is their portability. When the weather is acting like a teenager (I.e. not sure if it wants to grow up), hanging baskets can be enjoyed during warm weather days and swooped inside when there is a possibility of frost. In out, in out....

For Easter, a fresh potted bulb will just plain ‘ol make you feel good.

We have potted Easter Lilies, Tulips, Hyacinths, Azaleas, Spring Gardens, Muscari, and Daffodils in the cooler ready to go.

And, of course, if you are also playing the Easter Bunny by dropping something off for a loved one, decorating is complementary.

The greenhouse is open today with social distancing from 9-5. We are closed Easter Sunday.

Martha Washington geraniums, also known as Regal geraniums, are one of my favorite spring plants. They have large colorful flowers and firm, toothed foliage.

I like their soft incense like fragrance, which seems exotic but subtle.

Regal geraniums are used indoors in the cooler months, and can later be transferred to the garden.

Here are a few new plants that are now ready in the greenhouse. The Lamium ‘Pink Chablis’, pansy baskets, Calendula ‘Caleb Yellow’, Leucanthemum ‘Daisy May’, and Bacopa ‘Gulliver’ are quite cold tolerant . Still, cover them or bring them in if the temps are hovering around the freezing mark.

We’re going to put a few pansy baskets and ranunculus outside on a cart at the door near the wholesale entrance. If you want to swing by and look at colors and varieties, just call our number and we can make the payment by credit card over the phone.

Not sure how this will work out, but we are doing the best we can!
