Why do we install a deck board running perpendicular to all of the other deck boards on our decks?

This is what’s known as a “breaker board”. When a deck is longer than 20 feet, we have to use two deck boards to span the entire distance. Rather than butt the ends of deck boards directly up to one another (which creates uneven, messy gaps throughout the deck) we install a breaker board to create a clean transition between each board on either side of the deck. This is a simple, yet effective way to take your new composite deck to the next level!

Framing is all done on this one, laying some beautiful trex decking in the morning!

On top of all of our joists, we install a product called G-tape. This is an acrylic based, self sealing, waterproof membrane tape that provides a seal between the decking and structure of the deck. Over time, this will greatly reduce the amount of rot than is so often experienced on the top half inch of deck joists, often caused by leaves, dirt, and other debris getting in between deck boards over time. This inexpensive product will keep any deck like new for years!

We call this the flatness test. Your new deck should be as flat as possible, and often deck joists from the factory vary in width by over 1/2 of an inch. We take the time to make sure all of our deck joists are cut down to the exact same height, so there are no variations or humps whatsoever in your brand new decking surface. The satisfaction of being able to slide a level down it is pretty cool for us, too!

The Pictures don’t do justice to how amazing this deck turned out. The white Westbury aluminum railing goes beautifully with the Slate Gray Timbertech Azek decking, and provided our client with a high end, low maintenance product that will last decades to come!

What an incredible project this was!

When we came to provide a free estimate in late march, we knew big changes were needed. The original deck felt cramped, poorly thought out, and looked as though it’s golden years were long ago.

The most important thing to our client was creating a deck that gave that “wow” factor. That’s why when we rebuilt the deck, we made it almost 50% bigger, and used the highest quality Azek Timbertech decking and Wesbury aluminum railing available on the market. We also installed Azek post lighting to create a living space, even in the nighttime.

Toward the end of the design phase, we had an idea to wrap the structural posts in painted Azek trim. This idea is what really makes the deck stand out from the rest. Now that there is not one piece of visible wood on the structure, our client should never have to worry again about the worn down look of older exposed lumber ever again.
