For those of you with tiled shower pans (shower floor) make sure you keep your drain/trap clear on a monthly basis. Michigans water is full of minerals and can cause even properly installed pans to encounter visible mineral deposit buildup at the weep holes. I've seen drains completely closed with these deposits. Scraping away the deposits keep the buildup to minimum maximizing water flow. Make sure you flush the trap with a couple gallons of water to remove fallen debris. When the pan liner is not adequately sealed underneath after cutting the drain hole backups can get under the liner that can cause leaks. Prevent this type of leak by preventing backups.

Make sure contractors really ARE experienced. Check their references. See how many tile/grout jobs they've actually done (and done well). So many times people hire contractors that talk a good game, but the finished product clearly indicates that they don't have the experience they said they did. Then, you have problems and they're out of business. Save yourself the headache. Ask for references and CHECK them!!

Beware of the contractor who offers to color seal or glaze your grout in bathrooms. Tiled showers and tub surrounds are usually grouted with an unsanded or sanded grout. If the grout is in such poor condition that it can't be cleaned there are usually other issues causing the problem. Color sealing and glazing do not allow the grout to dry if moisture is resident behind the tile or if moisture gets into the grout. What will happen is that mildew will form under the applied product causing the grout lines to darken and eventually pushing the product off. I've been in over 12,000 bathrooms and this is a process I would never recommend. Cleaning or regrouting, if possible, is your best bet. If these products were that good why don't we use them during new bathroom installations. Stick with the tried and true.

I can't tell you the number of calls we get to try and help do-it-your-selfer's fix the project they've just completed. Most often, it's to remove residual grout haze that's been left after grouting a new tile project. Please consult a professional before attempting projects on your own. The last thing you want to do it have to rip up a new job or look at the grout haze forever on your newly tiled floor.
