The word is probably out by now, but I retired from Evergreen in August to do more farming and spend more time with family - whoohoo! I still do some digging and trenching, but for the irrigation installs, maintenance, landscaping, planting, snow removal, rototilling, and the other services we offered, I’ll no longer be available. I know winterization is on everyone’s minds right now with the nighttime temps dipping into the freezing range. If you need recommendations on who to call in the area that offers these services now, just shoot us a message. Thanks for your years of patronage!

Folks in Colorado know the weather the past few days is just a teaser and that another round of freezing temps, damaging frosts, and a dump of snow isn’t out of the realm of possibilities. If you’ve already started your sprinkler system up, keep your eyes on the nighttime lows and take a few precautions to protect your system, especially your back flow valves:
1) Wrap your back flow with an old blanket, coat, or towel, then cover with a trash can or bucket if possible (plastic garbage bag as a last resort). Keeping the freezing cold wind and damp moisture away from the valve will certainly help
2) Turn your water main off in your house and drain it back if possible. No one wants to wake up to a flooded basement because the valve broke

Most of the time, you won’t need to have the system blown out for a short-term cold snap, as long as the daytime highs keep the ground temperatures warm. The main concern is anything above ground, especially if those components are on the north side of your house.

Any questions, please message or call. Please note we’ve dropped the land line and are only using 630-5890 now for a phone line.

Welp, it just wouldn’t be Colorado if we didn’t have some craziness, right? Most of us have been watering for several weeks now. Take precautions tonight and tomorrow to be ready for the dip in temperatures. NWS is predicting 29-30* temps for both Friday and Saturday nights here.

•Protect your backflow, especially for valves on the north sides of buildings. Wrapping the bells and exposed pipes with old blankets or coats and covered with plastic bags or totes to block the wind
•It would probably be a good idea to turn your water off to the sprinklers at the pipe in your house then let it drain back

Most sprinkler heads should be ok, as ground temperatures won’t reach freezing levels. Anything exposed and above ground will be at risk for freezing and breaking.

Bring in potted plants and cover new budding plants to protect emerging growth.

Praying for moisture, but being prepared ahead of time will help prevent damage to systems and structures.

It appears Colorado has entered the temperature rollercoaster stage of fall. Be prepared as the forecast for next week takes us from highs in the 90s this weekend to lows in the 30s by Tuesday and Wednesday. 😳 For those of you with sprinkler systems, please be mindful to protect your above-ground backflow valves, especially if they're on the north side of your house or unprotected from the predicted winds! Old blankets, towels, or coats wrapped around your pipes and valve then covered with thick plastic bags or plastic bins will usually suffice through a temporary snap. This is likely just the beginning of the temperature yo-yo so be ready to pull all the coverings off and continue to water for a while after this!

Out of respect for the Governor's executive order and concern for both our employees and customers' health, Evergreen will temporarily stop work on customers' properties as we are not considered part of essential workforce and our projects are not ones that require continual maintenance or weather or calendar-related timelines. If you're on our list for beginning projects, please know we're anxiously awaiting the go-ahead to begin working again. We're available for any emergencies that may arise, so do please call if you need our help. We appreciate your patience through this period and our phones are still open if you need to contact us.

We pray that you and your family are safe through this chaotic and weird period of time, and that you can find daily blessings in this temporary new normal. Thank you to the essential workers who are continuing to keep our community running. We want to thank the fellow businesses and workers who are also honoring the order in a step of protection of our town and the people that matter the most to us.

The early trickle of new coronavirus infections has turned into a steady current. By creating simple simulations, we can see how to slow it down.

It's hard to believe we're so close to starting the 2020 season! This year brings many new and exciting changes for Evergreen as we've decided to split our services into Landscape Design and Installation (sod, hydroseeding, perennials, concrete curbing, etc) and Turf Maintenance (turf treatment applications for fertilizer and w**d control, mowing, aeration, dethatching, etc). Yuma natives Marc and Tami Haruf along with Jared and Mollie Coughlin have decided to purchase and take over the Turf Maintenance services and have founded ProGreen Lawn Services. Many of our regular customers have already received our services letters but if you haven't received one yet, please reach out and let us know! Check out ProGreen's FB page, give them a Like and a Share, and make sure you're on their list to start your 2020 season! Power Raking is right around the corner!

Proudly Owned and operated since 2020

Colorado falls are as unpredictable as Colorado springs! While 80° temps are in the forecast for this week, so are frost advisories. Cover those beautiful flower pots and protect those veggies - we still have warm days to come. Expect to start winterizing sprinkler systems towards the end of the month but keep watering your turf in the meantime. The subsoil still needs to build up moisture to help get through winter.

Frost Advisory issued for the plains east and northeast of Denver tonight. Lows 32-36. Cover frost sensitive plants or bring indoors. Denver/Boulder areas should see only patchy frost at most with lows 36-39.

It seems like winter is behaving like that long-lost second cousin twice-removed that found your address on the internet and now you can't get them to remove their Winnebago out of your driveway.

If you started up your sprinkler systems (and most of you have) and your backflow valves are on the north side of your house (and quite a few of them are), protect it in this cold snap. Old blankets, towels, or coats wrapped around the pipes and covered with a plastic bucket, trash can, or garbage bag is usually enough to keep a freeze from damaging your pipes. It will usually take more than a frost to damage pipes, but better safe than sorry! Cover your spring annuals with an old sheet or blanket to keep your blooms going for a few more months.

Temperatures will drop into the lower and mid 30s Tuesday night. Frost is possible.

Do you see patches like this in your turf grass but are confused because you're watering several times a week? This patch of dead / dying grass isn't due to lack of water - it's a fungus. Watering more will actually help it to spread, not green it back up. There are actually several different kinds of fungi that have been identified in this region, such as ascochyta, necrotic ring spots, fairy rings, and silver dollar spot disease. Unfortunately, not all fungicides are effective to fighting these ~ they're disease-specific and what works for one may not work for another. So what can you do if you spot these in your lawn?

~Most fungi are spread by foot, lawn equipment, and water ~ try to avoid walking through or mowing these areas if possible. If you have pets, this becomes harder but roping off the area to keep dogs from walking through may help. Mow around the areas to avoid the spread of the fungus on the wheels and on your feet.
~Cut down on watering the area. We can't help where rain falls, but we can reduce the amount of time our lawn sprinklers cover the area. While you don't want to completely kill the area by not watering, reducing the amount of time on that zone, or turning it off and watering surrounding areas by hand, may help the fungus dry up and stop spreading faster than if normal watering cycles continue. CSU recommends watering turf grass 6-8" as infrequently as possible (usually twice / week). This helps strengthen root growth without creating watering stress.
~Don't cut your grass too short and don't let it grow too long. Healthy turf grass (especially Kentucky bluegrass varieties) should be cut to maintain a height of 2-1/2 to 3", and no more than 1/3 of the grass blade should be removed during a cutting.
~Aerate your lawns to improve root health and water drainage.

Overall healthy turf grass is better able to fight off infections such as fungi, but it may still infect even the healthiest of lawns. Be watchful and call if you need help!
