HOY SE CELEBRA UN SANTO LOCAL, CONOCIDO SIMPLEMENTE COMO EL MUERTICO. ESTE JOVEN SORDO FUE DETENIDO EN LAS MONTANAS DE LARA - LA FUMAROLA - HACE DECADAS, CUANDO VIAJABA. COMO NO PUDO USAR PALABRAS PARA DEFENDERSE, FUE OBLIGADO A CAVAR SU PROPIA TUMBA, FUE ASESINADO Y ENTERRADO ALLA. SU MEMORIA SIGUE VIVA EN ESTAS MONTANAS Y CADA ENERO EL PUEBLO DE PALO VERDE, SANARE, VENEZUELA SE REUNE EN SU TUMBA PARA CELEBRAR SU VIDA Y PEDIR SU BENDICION. The children of recognize the sacred quality of their land: sacred earth, sacred rain, sacred people who have gone before them. Today was the feast of their local saint, simply known as El Muertico, or the little dead one. This was a young deaf traveler passing through the Fumarola mountain many decades ago, stopped at a military checkpoint. Unable to use words to defend himself, he was forced to dig his own grave and killed and buried there. His memory lives on and on in these mountains and each January the villagers of Palo
Verde, Sanare, Venezuela gather at his grave to celebrate his life and ask for his blessing. Salve Muertico, all those being stopped at checkpoints without words. Bless also our hands so that we may bring forth food, life, nourishment from your land.

Life always triumphs! As small hands and tiny hearts take power in Washington the small hands and large heart of Juan Carlitos takes on life, far from the seat of global power, in Sanare, Venezuela. How can a few chayotes in one set of hands compare to the massive arsenal of weapons in the other? The chayotes are more powerful. Food, grown from the earth is the only thing that will sustain the human race. Juan Carlos is only ten, but he knows that. And he knows that growing native crops like chayote guarantees food, life, sustenance, to his family, even when all the oil runs out.

Today we celebrate Three Kings Day. But maybe we should celebrate Three Queens Day. These three young girl gardeners of are growing gifts of corn, beans and squash for their families in our community garden. Globally, women produce more than half of all food grown. The girls of Conuco Colibri are reviving the traditional Venezuelan "conuco" and helping us to re-learn how to feed ourselves. Thanks Three Queens!

GUAMA! So sweet and fluffy and yummy that it is called Ice Cream Beans in English. Its tree gives shade to our compost, nitrogen to our crops and energy to all of us so that we can keep gardening all morning at with the kids of Hummingbird Farm Club.
