SON - Bếp Nhà Đãi Khách is a contemporary Vietnamese kitchen in Ho Chi Minh City, built around a simple idea: how can the feeling of a Vietnamese home be translated into a modern dining space.

The following series unfolds the project through the lens of architecture and interior design — from the overall façade to the finer details — revealing how NU embedded the spirit of SON into every layer of the space.

TRB Ben Thanh began with a simple brief: to translate a brand built around everyday ritual into a space at one of Saigon’s most active urban intersections.

From façade to interior, from geometry to material detail, reflection guided every decision as a method grounded in context, culture, and place.

How Material Guides Attention Across Space

The Running Bean Ben Thanh’s material palette shapes how attention shifts across space.

On the façade, bronze-toned terracotta and brass metal sustain a high level of visual activity, continuously shifting under changing light and constant street movement. This creates a surface that remains active and perceptually dense.

Inside, Vietnamese traditional materials gradually reduce this intensity. The atmosphere becomes softer, quieter, and more controlled, allow slowing down.

The material strategy emerges from how different elements work together to form spatial conditions.

Seating Rhythm in Space

Lighting at The Running Bean Ben Thanh shifts with the hour — gradually softening the atmosphere and reflecting the city's tempo as it moves from the activity of midday to the calm of everything.

The seating arrangement is layered and active — different zones supporting different rhythms of use throughout the day. The continuous flow of movement and pause gives the space a flexible, unhurried quality.

A Pattern Across Scales

The cultural logic established in the spatial organization continues into material and surface. Floor, ceiling, wall, and tabletop surfaces share the same compartmentalized geometry, drawn from Ô Ăn Quan, a traditional Vietnamese folk game — carried across scales from the fine divisions of tabletop surfaces to the larger compositions on ceiling and wall. Repeated at consistent intervals, the geometry holds the interior together — quietly consistent across every surface and scale.

Rattan furniture, woven surfaces, and handcrafted finishes ground the interior in the same material world as the game — natural, tactile, and rooted in everyday Vietnamese life. The woven surfaces introduce their own grid: the interlaced pattern of rattan and weave creates a secondary layer of compartmentalized geometry, extending the same logic from floor to furniture to ceiling.

At The Running Bean Ben Thanh, geometry and craft operate according to the same cultural logic — carried from the scale of the plan down to the texture of surface.

Two Cultural References, One Spatial Logic

The interior of The Running Bean Ben Thanh is organized through a clear spatial logic, drawn from two references: Vietnamese folk play and the material memory of Ben Thanh Market.

The first is Ô Ăn Quan — a game structured by continuous movement. Stones are picked up from one compartment and redistributed sequentially across others, forming a loop. When the stones are replaced with coffee beans, this same movement becomes legible as “The Running Bean” — beans continuously moving from one point to another. The link between game and brand lies in this shared condition of constant circulation.
This movement is translated into the interior. Circulation moves continuously through the space. Seating introduces moments of pause, while service counters concentrate activity and exchange. The space unfolds as a continuous sequence, without rigid zoning.

The second reference is Ben Thanh Market — not as image, but as material register. Ceramic surfaces and woven textures, familiar to the market’s everyday condition, are reinterpreted in form and finish. This material layer extends the surrounding context into the interior.

At TRB Ben Thanh, movement and material operate together, structuring how the space is continuously used, paused, and resumed.

Architecture in Urban Rhythm

The rhythm of Ben Thanh Market — defined by its repeating arches — has long set the pace of the surrounding streets.

At TRB Ben Thanh, this rhythm is carried into the architecture through a series of arched openings along both façades. Their repetition establishes order, anchors the corner condition, and aligns the building with its context.

These openings extend beyond geometry. They open the interior to the street — allowing light, movement, and the daily life of the neighborhood to become part of the experience within.

Here, architecture operates through proportion and rhythm, keeping the café in constant exchange with its surroundings.

Composing The Interior

The interior of The Running Bean Ben Thanh is shaped through a series of spatial decisions, each extending the project’s core idea of Reflection.

Arched window geometries, drawn from the surrounding market context, are carried inward to maintain continuity between façade and interior. At the point of entry, a double-height void establishes scale and orientation — opening the section, drawing natural light deep into the space, and visually connecting the different levels.

Suspended within this void, an artwork by lam.weavingspaces acts as a central anchor. Referencing the form of a coffee bean, its porous, vertical composition allows light to pass through and diffuse softly across the interior.

Here, reflection is not applied as a surface condition, but embedded within the spatial logic — translating context, brand identity, and the rhythm of the surrounding neighborhood into the experience of the space.
