AI fits into this design sequence as a tool—not a replacement for the architect—and not every project can be DIY, even with AI.
As shown in the workflow, AI is most effective during the Schematic Design and Design Development phases, where speed, iteration, and visualization are critical. It helps generate options, refine concepts, and enhance presentations. But these stages are only a portion of the entire process.
The earlier phases—client meetings, site visits, and conceptualization—require deep understanding, empathy, and the ability to translate real human needs into space. The later phases—documentation, permitting, negotiation, and construction coordination—demand technical expertise, accountability, and professional responsibility.
This is where the idea of DIY with AI falls short. Not all projects can be handled independently because architecture involves more than creating visuals—it deals with safety, compliance, context, and long-term functionality. Mistakes in these areas are costly and sometimes irreversible.
AI can assist, but it cannot replace the architect’s role in making informed decisions, managing complexity, and delivering a cohesive, buildable outcome. In this sequence, AI enhances efficiency—but the architect remains the one who ensures everything works in reality, not just on screen.
