EDF Energy commissioned ArcCan to design an innovative all-weather courtyard shading solution using tensile fabric architecture for use at the Hinkley Point power station in Somerset.

The proposed structures cover an extraordinary 1,800 square metres and feature hypar structures, as well as a substantial L-shaped conic canopy with one dropped side to combat prevailing winds.

Schools in East Sussex, West Sussex and Brighon & Hove can benefit from grant funding for eligible projects courtesy of the Southover Manor Trust.

Eligible activities include the development of buildings, for example, science, arts, or special needs. Also included is projects for new learning resources, outdoor learning and playground equipment, which means that funding would be considered for canopy projects.

Projects in areas of deprivation or educational disadvantage will be given sympathetic consideration, but all must be within East Sussex, West Sussex and Brighton & Hove.

The Falcon double-pitch tensile fabric entrance shelter was originally designed and installed for the British Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

We completed this project in 2011 as well as a similar project in Kathmandu, both for Mace Construction. We sent our own riggers and employed local labour to assist with the er****on at both sites.

We were delighted to be involved in the brand-new Adventure Village development at the popular Haven Holiday Park in Caister-on-Sea.

We were tasked with creating a permanently covered area for the karts so that they could be kept outside all year round. The client wanted a canopy to protect the longevity of the machines and to keep the karts dry at all times, because no one likes sitting on a wet seat!

The project required a bespoke design due to the unusual layout of the karting storage. This resulted in us designing and fabricating a tensile fabric hypar canopy consisting of nine posts with alternating heights to create a saddle shape.

The end result wasn't too bad!

Grants of up to £500 are available to UK State funded Primary and Secondary Schools to enable them to get their pupils learning outdoors.

The Ernest Cook Trust’s Outdoor Essentials Grant scheme will award 180 grants to support school travel and transport costs to outdoor learning venues, including outdoor learning centres, forest schools, countryside parks, woodlands, national parks, farm parks, farms (including city farms), coastal areas and beaches. Trips to outdoor adventure centres for outdoor activities (such as kayaking and climbing) may be considered.

The grants are being awarded on a first-come basis, so schools that are interested should apply right away.
