Always happy to see these beautiful autumn blooms.
True Autumn crocus (not colchicums which are often mistakenly called crocus, nor saffron crocus) and Iris unguicularis (aka Stylosa).
Both need dry and sunny spots to flower well.
Sadly crocus, especially autumn ones are very hard to come by in New Zealand so if you have them, treasure them.

In a jungle style garden interest comes mainly from the composition of foliage colours, shapes and textures. The flowers that appear are the icing on the cake. Even in temperate gardens like ours in Wellington you can achieve a look that is lush and full year round. Admittedly this terrace on our property is a sheltered microclimate which allows us to grow things such as bananas which might not be so easy in a more exposed site.

There are definite signs of things dying back in the garden as we approach April. In contrast there are perennials whose blooms are just beginning to show and yet others which are still waiting in the wings for our last flush of colour in May.

Clouds of white. Flowers that glow in the dim light of autumn bring a freshness to the garden as others parts are showing signs of decaying into winter bleakness.

Just for fun. An evening shot taken from inside at 7.40pm last night.
It shows up how well the white flowers glow in the evening light especially when you compare it to the lavender Michaelmas daisies by the white stone path.

Todays butterflies on dahlias, scabiosa Black Knight, Asters and the finished flowers of Eupatorium cannabibum. So many butterflies, honey bees and bumble bees in the garden on this gorgeous autumn day in Wellington, NZ.

From the Malaghan Institute

Thank you so much for supporting our final push to raise the funds needed to complete our ENABLE-2 CAR-T clinical trial, a critical step towards Kiwis getting access to CAR T-cell therapies here at home, without the crushing costs or barriers.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, we’ve already come so far. But reaching the finish line now depends on the continued support of our community.

We acknowledge that you have already shown your generous support and we are so thankful! We still wanted to let you know that from today until midnight 31 March, every donation to the Malaghan Institute will be matched dollar-for-dollar thanks to a group of generous supporters – up to $225,000.

We would be so grateful if you could share this with your family and friends and encourage them to make the most of the last week of the New Zealand tax year and make a tax-deductible donation that has DOUBLE the impact in helping ensure no New Zealander has to leave their country for life-changing cancer treatment.

Moments like this are rare in medical research. Progress takes years of dedication, persistence and support from people who believe New Zealanders deserve access to world-class treatment.

Thank you for standing with us.

Team Malaghan
