"What's the best stone for countertops?"

Depending on the look you're aiming for, and your tolerance for maintenance in the home. Knowing the differences and characteristics of materials, will absolutely drive you to one stone or another.

There are lot's of options, and unfortunately a ton of misleading information out there.

Here are some basic notes to help you understand the differences between stones. Of course I highly recommend working with someone like myself when shopping for countertops.

Granite:
- Natural
- Needs to be sealed
- Durable (hardness)
- Has to be cleaned with a certified stone cleaner or Dawn soap and water.
- Ability to stain

Quartz:
- Man-made stone with quartz crystals
- Does not need to be sealed
- Ability to use any cleaning product that you prefer
- Extremely difficult to stain
- Should be cautious with extreme heat

Marble:
- Natural
- Has to be sealed
- Less durable (soft)
- It will stain
- It will chip
- It will etch
- Has to be cleaned with a certified stone cleaner or Dawn soap and water.

Quartzite:
- Natural
- Needs to be sealed
- Durable (harder than granite)
- Has to be cleaned with a certified stone cleaner or Dawn soap and water.
- Higher potential of staining than granite.

Soapstone:
- Natural
- Does not need to sealed
- Will not stain (100% non porous)
- Extremely soft (softer than marble)
- Absolutely will chip and scratch
- 100% heat resistant
- Recommended Dawn soap and water for cleaning

Dolomite:
- Natural
- Needs to be sealed
- Somewhat durable (considered a hard marble)
- Ability to stain
- Has to be cleaned with a certified stone cleaner or Dawn soap and water.
