Upcycled by Clare

Upcycled by Clare Unique home décor items made from upcycled materials. We produce very small volumes, so we don't ship outside of South Africa at this time. ”Khanyi” means light.

The business of Khanyi Designs is to make my customers' homes, my community and my environment a little bit brighter. I’m passionate about creating and teaching. I love exploring and sharing the potential of functional upcycled art. I enjoy learning the ancient skill of weaving, and the pretty old skill of papier-mâché, and passing them on when I can, e.g. to students with disabilities at Enkuthaz

weni Skills Centre in Port Alfred. Khanyi Designs are original and unique. Each product is a limited edition or made to order for people who enjoy having such an imaginatively-produced artefact in their homes. They are hand-painted with acrylic paint produced in South Africa, and sealed with water-based sealer to be water resistant. Made from guaranteed 100% locally-read newspaper, and other locally-sourced upcyclables including ecobricks.

Gulliver is an elephant sculpture, handmade from upcycled materials. His name was chosen because, like his namesake, he is a great traveller and an imposing character who brings a sense of adventure wherever he goes. He also enjoys his job of bringing light and adding a talking point to your space, with his trunk holding the bulb as though he has just discovered something rather wonderful. Gulliver is a one-of-a-kind piece, made to be both useful lighting and a characterful work of art. He's the first in a very limited series of elephant lights I'm making, starting in September 2026.

He is 45 cm long, 15cm wide, and 30cm tall.

Latest pics of Ace.

The final layer on this one uses an old dictionary. The paper is of better quality than newspaper but still thin enough to be easy to use on sculptures.

I recently bought a lifetime's supply of glass cabochons and have started painting the backs of them, for eyes.
